On some of the older units, there used to be an oil by pass in case the filter clogs. This allows oil to flow. It may be bad.

Holden Viva My car sound like a diesel

Hi Jason sorry but the information you have supplied gives me very little to go on. Has this issue just appeared? (1) check oil level correct if low (2) does the oil run off the dipstick or drip off when removed. If it runs off it may require an oil change. If the kilometers are really high use a thicker grade oil.15/40 fit new oil filter. Check if oil is contaminated, if water oil filler and oil will look creamy. If fuel you will smell petrol in oil. Both these issues require fixing 1st before an oil change. It may be an engine fault if all the above is ok and will require a mechanical repair by a mechanic.

How to adjust the lifters on the pontiac montana. Or replace them. And how much does it cost.

try draining the oil to the required limit , there will be a min and max mar on the dipstick, the noise on start up is the excess oil trying to be pumped around when it is cold , also excessive oil can leak out of the main crank seal into the clutch housing and cause damage there

Toyota hilux 1.6 litre 1987

Buy 5 quarts, put 4 quarts in, start the engine let run 20-30 seconds, wait 1 min to let oil drain back down in pan then check it. Add 1/4 of the 5th quart at a time untill the dipstick reads full.

When I am traveling about 45mph I notice gear oil on my rear window.

Gday mate, geoff here, well gear oil up the tail gate would probably be a leak in the rear Dif, try looking under to find the trail of oil to its source, then post agian if you need, could be overfull & coming out of dif, there is also a hose that goes up into the bodywork from the dif , this is the breather, its hosed up high so that when you go into lets say cold water the dif doesnt **** water in when cooling from the water, hope this starts the process, correctly, geoff.,

Oil light flickering when i brake

Of course it can be low of oil, but I assume you checked the oil level. It can be a bad oil pressure sending unit. Check the wiring at the oil pressure sensor and make sure it is connected tight and is not loose. If you see any oil leaking from the sensor replace it. If this started after an oil change remove the filter and install a Purolator, Wix, or Mazda filter. Then check the oil level after starting and running the engine for a couple of minutes. Top it off with the correct weight oil. If it is overfull of oil it can cause the pressure light to flicker. Make sure it is not overfull. If so, drain out any excess oil. Overfilling is just as bad as under filling. Also make sure you are using the correct weight oil which is more than likely 5w20. Check your owner's manual to be sure. I would suspect you will find the oil pressure sensor is the culprit.

I just had oil & filter change at GM dealer yesterday. I appears as though they over-filled according to the dipstick by about a 1/4 an inch. Serious enough that I should drain off some?

A 1/4 of an inch can be 1/2 to a full quart of oil in many engines either way overfull is almost as important as under full, I would remove the amount it takes to put level at the dipstick indicator at the recommended reading!

How do you read the rodeo's engine oil dip stick? 2001 Rodeo

You should check it after the car is warm. Park on level ground
Pull the dipstick out and wipe it with a rag as it will have excess oil on it from the oil splashing. Stick the dipstick back in and pull it out again.

On the dipstick, there should be markings on the dipstick to signify the high and low points (high being the end closer to the handle) the oil should sit in between these two points.

What is the length of 2005 Chevy Colorado Z71 oil dipstick

If the manuel says 6 qt thats what it takes. Sometimes 5 min is not enough time for all the oil to run down from the top of the engine check the oil after 1 hour if you removed the same amount that you put in I think you are safe
