I can't tell from your message exactly what you are saying but it sounds like you are losing oil pressure while also having oil smoke coming out the exhaust. The exhaust problem is a sign that the piston rings need to be replaced. If the pressure gauge is fluctuating, you may need an oil pump replaced. If there is smoke under the hood, look for a leak that is getting on the exhaust. Loose valve covers may be the cause. Does the engine get hot according to the temp gauge? When you check the oil, is it full of bubbles? Does the coolant look like it has oil in it?

Well if i had to guess you have a 3.8 v-6 these engines are notorious for head problems the rattle you hear is the valves you will need to replace the heads but if this is a high milage motor it would be cheaper to find a good used motor and replace it as a total motor rebuild would be twice as much good luck

The engine is making a really loud knocking noise and the oil light is on. it also smells like something is burning or running hot

Doesn't sound good. Check oil level. Also check for metal in the oil once you pull the dipstick. A loud knocking noise is a sign of a blown engine may be you spun a rod in which case you would need engine replacement or rebuild

A loud ticking noise?

No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.

98 Camry 4 cy. - can oil completely leak out of engine and oil pan (regardless of where leak is) and absolutely not hear rocker arms or something chatter loudly enough to indicate low oil, plus not have...

Unless the drain plug was leaking, there really is no way that all of the oil can come out of the pan, as the oil level is below the sealing area between the pan and the block. With that being said, you will normally not hear any noises untill the oil pressure drops to zero, when there is not sufficient oil at the pickup of the oil pump. After that, and the noises start, you may have internal damage.

Loud clicking noise

It sounds like one of your pistons are bad as in the connecting rod pin's to the piston is loose and your getting to much internal engine pressure, that's why your getting lot's of oil coming out the top if your engine. Sorry for the news friend but time to retire the car, the cost is going to be greater to repair then replace.
