Question about 1996 Ford Aerostar Extended
Simply, once placed in park it will not come out of park without a lot of manipulation. Seems like one might break off the shift level (column shift/automatic). I have to park it in neutral with the key still in it and set the parking break. What can be causing this to lock up and is there an easy fix. Some have said that there is a loose linkage issue.

The gear selector is locked until the system detects the brake pedal is being pressed, the brake circuit then sends a signal to the shifter release solenoid to pull a pin back and let you shift out of park, this is a safety feature required by federal law, U need to have someone see if the brake lights go on when you press the pedal, if they don't check the switch at the top of the brake pedal, if the brake lights work then the little solenoid is defective.

Had the same problem; brake lights worked, too. It freaked me out at first as I was far from home when it happened, but I used the override to get back out of park for a couple days (it's under that "dime sized cover" like snorkelboby said). I asked a mechanic who also thought it was a solenoid issue but turns out, my brakes shoes needed replaced and I haven't had the problem since. I assume since you have to apply the brakes to shift, it must have been the worn shoes...
