You can run down to your local auto parts store and buy a serp belt tool. Or you can take a 3/8 drive ratchet, locate the 3/8 square hole in your tensioner and put the ratchet in the hole. For more leverage I put a deep socket over the ratchet handle and put a long 3/8 extention in the deep socket. This will provide ample leverage and will save buying more tools you do not need. Simply move the tensioner to the direction that takes pressure off of the belt.

The compressor is bad. I have the same problem. Apparently none of the tahoe's compressors are worth a ****! im having to replace mine too. You have to change the compressor, the accumulator/dryer, orifice tube and flush the lines. If you look on ebay you can buy a complete kit to change it all for about 300 bucks. The dealership tells me that you need to change the fan clutch as well. They told me that the reason for the noises is the fan clutch isnt working properly and it lets the compressor get too hot causeing higher pressures in the compressor due to the heat. They called it liquid slugging I believe. Mine doesnt break the belt but when you give it very much gas it makes a squeal and then a grinding noise like your trying to put a standard transmission in gear with it running without pushing in the clutch. I asked if you could just change the fan clutch and they told me no its too late, you have to change the compressor and dryer/orifice tube.

Ok, Alternators are a breeze on these things. There are two bolts that hold it on, and 2 sets of wires. If you haven't taken anything apart yet, and the belt is still on it, here's what to do. You will want one of those rubber or elastic bungee cords, about 2 and a half feet long(this makes it easy). Hook that bungee cord to your hood somewhere, so that it hangs down. Hook the other end on the serpentine belt right next to the alternator pulley. If you need to prop the hood up with a stick or something to keep it up, do so. Pull up on the belt, and watch the pulleys. The one that probably has a plastic pulley on it that moves up and down(this is the tensioner) is the one that you'll put a deep well socket in the middle of with a ratchet, and turn counterclockwise. This will make the belt go loose. Now you can work the belt off the alternator pulley, and once you get it off, the bungee cord will keep it in place, so you don't have to look at the diagram. Otherwise, if it comes off, there is a sticker just under the hood either on the fan shroud or the radiator support that has the belt diagram. Now, you can disconnect the battery, pull the rubber boot down off the nut and post on the back of the alternator, remove the nut and wire, and then unhook the wire from the side of the alternator. Now, you can remove the two bolts that hold the alternator on. You Will need to pry the alternator off at this point, as it fits really tightly in place. A socket extension or a large flat screwdriver works really well for this. Once you get it off, put the new one on exactly as you took the old one off. Note, you will have to release your tension on the tensioner at some point; i just ease it down, or if I can pull it off, wedge it somewhere where it won't loosen very far. Remember, on the tensioner, you're not trying to take the nut off. All you're doing is using it to move the tensioner arm. That's all there is to this job. Sometimes it can be stubborn with the prying part, especially getting it into place. Hope this is what you're after, and if you need more info, leave a comment for me.

Remove the belt, and check each pulley for resistance, or play. Each pulley should turn with ease, and have little to no play. Replace any pulleys that are found to be faulty. Check for pulley alignment. If the Crankshaft Pulley or any other pulley has loosened up, or not aligned properly, the belt will come right off. This is usually due to a frozen or faulty Idler Pulley or Tensioner Pulley. If all else checks out, ensure that the ribs are properly installed on each pulley, and no ribs are hanging off of any pulleys.

You must loosen the belt tensioner to replace the belt, do not try and stretch the belt as it will be damaged. The alternator also have a setting bracket on to set the tension.

You will have to 'untension' the serpentine belt first. Then to reinstall, put the belt on then loosen or 'untension' the belt tensioner. Very simple process. The belt tensioner is the first thing and the last thing you touch when changing the belt. The tensioner will apply tension to the belt after install.

Pop the hood of the car and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram on the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is on top of the fan shroud. The diagram will be a picture of all of the accessory pulleys and how the serpentine belt is routed among the pulleys. This diagram will give you the exact direction for routing the new belt onto the pulleys. If you cannot find a serpentine belt routing diagram, take a notepad and pen and draw out the exact routing diagram of the old belt across the pulleys.

  • 2 Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. It is located below the alternator on the left front side of the engine. The tensioner on the 3.4 liter, 3.5 liter and the 3.9 liter engines will require a 3/8 ratchet to release the belt tensioner. The 3.8 liter engine will require a ratchet and a 15 mm socket for the belt tensioner. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise to loosen and remove the belt from the belt tensioner pulley.
  • 3 Slide the old belt from the belt tensioner pulley. Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull the belt from the engine compartment.
  • 4 Route the new belt across the crankshaft pulley first. The crankshaft pulley is the big pulley on the bottom of the engine in the center. Then route the serpentine belt across the remaining pulleys as directed by the serpentine belt routing diagram. Leave the belt tensioner pulley for last.
  • 5 Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise again to relieve the tension and slide the new belt across the top of the belt tensioner pulley. Release the belt tensioner and the belt will tighten up as the tensioner applies pressure to the belt. Make sure the new belt is properly seated in all the pulleys.
  • 6 Crank the engine and inspect the belt again to make sure that it stays seated in the pulleys.

    I replaced the alternator on a 2003 Impala and now the s-belt is making noise, how do I check the adjustment of the automatic tension system and adjust if necessary?


    You have an automatic tensioner that isn't tight enough? And you replaced the alternator, without loosening the belt in any way? Does the tensioner have a little piston on it, you know like gas filled? And you let it loose without putting the pin in it? I think it may have lost it's tension. The spring pressure alone is not enough to handle the belt. The piston is so tight that you can't move it with your hands. A new one comes preset with a pin like a grenade in it, and when you are all set, you pull the pin, and out it comes. Pressure. I don't know if you can test it, or tighten the belt somewhere, most cars have a pulley that moves or the power steering pump will slide over and pick up the tension. A good way to check is, you should not be able to twist the belt 45 degrees with your fingers. Hope this helps.

    b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
    c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
    d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
    e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.
