Question about 1993 Ford Escort 4 Door

Open Question

I have a 1994 ford escort, 1.9L. Manual transmission. It has an extremely rough idle, shortage of accelerating power and continiously dies after getting off the freeway and taking it out of gear or when pushing the clutch in. i gave it a 5 star tune up; oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, plugs/wires, and PCV valve. The car is still having the problem. I'm thinking it must be something to do with the air or vacume system...can anybody help? It is killing my gas milage; went from 30MPG to 20MPG. PLEASE HELP!

This year of ranger had a few flaws, In one case, a break power booster was robbing the vacumm, you can test this by plugging it off and seeing the differance, but you will have limited brakes. This model year had a problem with a vacuum leak on the manifold. You can check these in many ways, but please don't use starting fluid. The rear of the manifold usually on the drivers side where it seals to the block.
Also, in 2 other cases a cracked head has gave me the same problem. It is caused from a loss of vacuum.

U i have a 97 ford escort that idles rough so i replaced the wires and plugs it still idles rough but runs a little better the coil shows spark on all cylinders any ideas

Often, on the Escorts of this vintage, rough idle can be due to a leak in the vacuum system. With the engine running, listen closely for any tell-tale hissing sounds coming from any of the vacuum hoses. Check that they are all securely in place and the end-clamps are all tight. Also check that the PCV valve and the hose connecting it to the manifold are securely in place. Another possibility is the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. If it is clogged or sticking, it can cause rough idle. Refer to a service manual to diagnose the IAC valve. Other things to check: make sure that the air intake is unobstructed and clean. You might consider cleaning the manifold and throttle body. Check the air filter and replace if necessary. Let me know if you have any other questions.

1994 Ford Escort dies at stops

I had the same problem a year ago. I problem was that the intake manifold gasket had a small hole and it was causing the computer to constantly change the air to fuel ratio. The constant changing cause the engine to die at stops.
