Question about 1999 Saturn SL

Radiator i have a 1998 chryler concorde and i change the radiator but now the oil is mixing with the antifreeze in the container where you poor the water and antifreeze

It sounds like a head gasket problem. You need to take it somewhere to let a competent mechanic check it out. Don't put it off too long...Good luck

2006 Chevy trail blazer. Keeps getting hot. Anti-freeze is full, overflow container is half full. Every time I turn it off can hear fluid in radiator boiling and bubbling?


Pam are you sure it's boiling? If the Antifreeze is boiling I'd think you'd see steam coming out of your reservoir as the water expands into the reservoir, but you didn't say you see anything like that.
Of course engines get hot, that's why we have the cooling systems but it doesn't sound like it's "boiling" to me with no signs of visible steam unless your antifreeze level is really low?

If it's really boiling, and you antifreeze level is good, then your reservoir should be getting filled up with expanded hot water that goes into it to catch it when it expands.

If the water isn't going into the reservoir, then maybe your antifreeze level in the radiator is too low and you need to add antifreeze?

Best to fill the radiator with the engine cooled down. If you ever have to open the radiator when it's hot, NEVER open it with your bare hand as you could get scolded with boiling water. Instead use a big thick towel to remove the radiator cap off a hot engine. Again, if you can, just wait until the engine cools then open the radiator cap.

With the engine cool, you can fill the radiator with a 50/50 antifreeze mix. The 50/50 mix come premixed 50 percent water, and 50 percent antifreeze. So you can throw that stuff straight into the radiator.

Non mixed antifreeze needs to be mixed 50/50. Some people use 50 percent distilled water when they mix it because distilled water doesn't have the minerals in it that may get stuck in your radiator. That's being a bit picky about it though. Tap water works fine in a pinch. The other 50 percent is antifreeze. You can mix it right in the radiator too, put in a measured amount of the antifreeze, followed by the same measured amount of water. The water pump will mix it all together when you run the engine.

Put the cap back on and run the engine and if/when the water "boils" it should go into your reservoir. If it does boil in go in the reservoir then yes...your engine is getting hot and the antifreeze is boiling.

When the antifreeze boils, it's probably because your thermostat is stuck closed. That means the thermostat isn't letting water circulate through the radiator to get cooled. Thermostats are cheap...no more than $30 I'd say for most cars. Changing them is pretty easy too as they are usually right at the top of the engine. A mechanic may charge $100 to change it....but it's an easy job on most vehicles requiring just a couple sockets/socket wrench.

Water and oil mixes together


Check oil by draining. Trans tank on radiator bottom may be oily slick you see if oil pan drained clean. Then trans is probably contaminated with antifreeze and that's what is mixing.

Crack in head passages could link oil and water, if you verify antifreeze and oil mixed in oil pan.

Changing aNTIFREEZE IN TUNDRA


Remove radiator cap.Remove radiator bung from bottom of radiator and drain into container.Replace bung.Replace new 50/50 water/antifreeze mix.Turn interior heater up to max with fan on lowest setting.Run vehicle until hot, topping up radiator as required.Replace radiator cap when bubbling ceases. Road test vehicle, return and recheck level after cooling down period.Recheck level over the next few days and check for any new signs of leakage in system.(Fresh introduction of antifreeze can reduce the tension of the water molecules and can produce new leaks)

Over heating


Try checking your antifreeze levels. If you antifreeze tank is low try filling it to the "Fill" or "Full" level. If your antifreeze tank is empty, remove your radiator cap, (make sure the engine has cooled off. If you try to open it while it's hot, you could get sprayed with hot antifreeze) and fill the radiator slowly. Then refill your antifreeze tank. Remember to always mix the antifreeze with water (50/50 mix) for full protection.

I have a 1998 Saturn. The reservoir often leaks water/antifreeze and light comes on to indicate. I have had water pump as well as reservoir replaced. Doesn't leak everday but still leaks. WHat is this?...


you need to find that leak, is the leak visible? if its not from radiator or the reservoir, the only other place I could think you can lose water is the head gasket. It happens to high miles and hard driver. 100k miles would likely be a head gasket. Leaking head gasket will also cause the engine temperature to rise and run super hot. antifreeze will leak through the head gasket down to your oil pan mixing oil and water. Check your oil by pulling the dip stick and see if you have oil mix with water; it will have a slimy looking colors, oil is light color and it should never be black. if it black than change your oil and inspect it afterward when the car has been running for while. when engine really hot cause the heat to effect the starter not to engage or start or engine is too hot to run. repairing head gasket could run anywere from 500-800 bucks.

How many gallons of antifreeze goes into my radiator?


If you are draining your radiator, or just need to add some, there are a couple of options. You can either buy antifreeze in a 50/50 premixed solution, or purchase one gallon of antifreeze and 1 gallon of distilled water (less than $1.00 at your local grocery store) and mix equaly in another container that way you have a proper mixture in your radiator. The 50/50 mixture comes in an orange color and the full strength comes in the traditional green color.

Oil is smoking near dip stick,won't go over 10 mph, now won't even start.It had been overheating for a while we filled it up with anti freeze 50/50 then the oil started smoking. 1996 chrysler concorde.


you did put the antifreeze mix in the radiator and not in the oil cap didnt you?

Sounds like you put the water where the oil goes!

you may have a jammed thermostat if you didnt do this, or badly out of whack ignition timing.

2001 blazer - i have changed radiater,heatercore,waterpump and 2 thermostats - still overheating on me? coolant level is fine until it gets hot and boils out overflow tank? help!


Are your antifreeze 50/50 mix. Too much antifreeze ratio will cause over heating, the antifreeze will start to gel when it get's hot causing poor circulation. Water is the best liquid for heat transfer but it will also boil over and steam out the radiator cap, that is why antifreeze is added to keep this from happening. Looks like you have covered most of the base on your cooling system, Did you do a complete cooling system flush to get some of the corrosion out and it's been know for the orange antifreeze when gelled will clog up the cooling system. Make surer you have 50/50 mix and if you not sure you can buy a antifreeze meter at any large parts store like Auto Zone. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

blown head gasket, cracked head or cylinder wall. Oil is entering into coolant system. You should also check the dip stick in the engine oil. If milky or coco foamy. Would suggest not driving until problem identified. If cylinder fills with coolant with both valves closed & you crank it with the starter it could hydraulic the cylinder & bend the rod & do other damage as well.

OIL IN ANTIFREEZE


Everyone automatically assumes that oil and water mixing means a blown head gasket or cracked engine block. Of course common sense is usually not that common. Oil in coolant is a different problem than coolant in oil. The former is a low pressure leak, and could indicate only an intake manifold gasket. It could also be an early or small head gasket leak. Coolant in oil is usually a cracked block or torn head gasket, and has concomitant symptoms of white exhaust smoke and milky oil on dipstick. If you replace the head gasket and the problem persists, an intake gasket could have fixed the problem.
