Question about 2001 Ford Focus

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Ford Focus 2.0 SPI that has trouble starting & Dies when I do get it started!

My 2001 Ford Focus suddenly would not start. the engine would turn over. I was told it was the Fuel Pump. I've replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator, Fuel relay, new spark plugs & wires, the Mass Air Flow, & new air filter (I tested it during the process & only got a code back for Mass Air flow ) It finally started, sounded great, went for a test drive. I didn't get 1 mile, & the red battery light came on & the car died. it did start again if I didn't give it any gas. But as soon as I put it in Drive & gave it gas, it would die. I did it back into the garage, but now again, it will not start. I'm begging for help!!! PLEASE!

SOURCE: car dies when accelerate. do i need new fuel pump?

It sounds from your description that the fuel pump is weak. To check the fuel pressure you need a fuel pressure test gauge for fuel injection. Attach the gauge to the test port schrader valve and turn the ignition to the on position. Record the reading. Now start the engine and record that reading. Unplug the pressure regulator vacuum line and record the reading.
The pump should have pressure with in specs but if low, start with the installation of a new complete pump. It is located in the fuel tank. Also replace your fuel filter.
Hope this helps you.

yes very very common code for these motors i get them all the time. now the first thing i do is listen to the pcv valve for noise if it is rattling this is the problem and is the most common of all. another thing is the intakes leak from cracks in them but the only way to find it is with a smoke machine. now the one other thing i have seen before is debre like a leaf in the mass air flow sensor but you have replaced it so most likely no that.

do your self a favor and change the pcv valve it only cost under 5 dollars. if this is not it you will need to find the leak in and around the intake or a vacuum hose.

because you have two lean banks this mean if it is a leak then it has to be in common with both banks and that is the vacuum line system intake etc...

let mew know if you have any more question. good luck man

SOURCE: I have a 2001 Ford

This valve can become sticky with deposits. shoot some spray carb cleaner into it to free it up.

also check for vacuum leaks at all hoses and connections

Why is focus is suddenly running rough. pingy sounds like timing is advanced 2001 2.0?

With out actually hearing it or knowing what engine is in it it hard to be 100% sure but, it depends on if its the 2.0 spi or the 2.0 ztec dual overhead cam, if its the spi, that particular engine is known for dropping the valve seats out of the head, the seats are the sealing steel sealing ring that the valve closes against during different strokes of the engine. its an aluminum head and a steel seat, they will expand and contract at different rates, if the seat doesnt have enough interference when pressed in it can fall out and damage the head, valve and piston, when the seat comes loose you will have a misfire and a noise coming from the engine, now.... that being said it could be a timing belt that has partially slipped... this is a real tough call without seeing and or hearing the car, what codes does it have?, whats the fuel pressure etc.... This is one you should have a qualified tech look at... sorry.

it very well can be that depending on the severity of the ticking noise, if it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, place your hand on it only when you first start it up and if you can feel it knocking slightly and if the noise dies away once warmed up id say its your lifter, if its a heavier knocking rather than a ticking and comes from below or bottom end of engine it may be big end bearing, not good. try putting some engine treatment through the engine oil and make sure you run it in as directions state then change the oil and filter and see if that helps :)
