Question about 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis

Open Question

2000 Grand Marquis has a groan when turning slowly

2000 grand marquis groans when turning Sound sounds like its in the steering gear box? Car had wheel alignment and new upper ball joints to see if they would fix the groan, made no different (although my steering is not sloppy at all now). Makes the sound when turning at slow speeds. Its not popping but a groan sound. The car has variable steering depending on how fast you are going (the car was designed to do this). Is there a way to see if that might not be working right and causing the noise? It seems to steer properly except for the groan. Thanks

JacDempsey, how about shocks/struts? If they are bad, that could be what u need to cruise the highway nice and smooth the way a Grand Marquis should.

SOURCE: my 94 mercury grand marquis

There are several possibilities that could be causing your problem.

  • Low on power steering fluid
  • Bad steering box
  • Bad tie rod end
  • Bad ball joints
Assuming the power steering fluid is full, bring the car to any brake shop or repair shop that does front end alignments to diagnose the problem further. I hope you find this points you in the right direction. Thank you for using Fixya! Greg

Have a chirping sound on drivers side of car while driving, sounds like its coming from either front or rear tire area. its a 2000 mercury grand marquis.

front or rear? thats a big area to narrow it down to. I would suspect the universal joints to "chirp" it may make more noise backwards or forwards.

I had my 1994 mercury grand marqui parked in the driveway the other day and I needed to turn the steering wheel alittle bit to see something I did not start the car I just unlocked the steering column and...

DOn,t drive this. Open the hood, follow the steering shat to the gear box. there you will see a Rubber like connector that connects the shaft to the gear box. This is what snapped. Your car is really not safe to drive untill this is fixed.

1988 merc grand marquis, vacuum diapram, symptoms? any gear i put it into, i hear a vacuum like sound, is this it?

The 1988 merc has an automatic emergency brake release that has a valve on the steering column under the dash, when you put the tranny in gear it sends vacuum to the valve on the brake to release it. It could be the valve on the steering column that is the problem. Good luck!

I am looking for the location of a fuse box on 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. Where is it located?

There are 2 fuse blocks in a 2000 Grand marquis, One is under the dashboard on the drivers side. There is a panel that you have to remove that is just below the steering column. The other is under the hood on the Passenger side of the car, pretty close to the Coolant overflow reservoir. The functions of all those fuses are in a diagram located in your service manual. If you need a picture, let me know, i have an 01 grand marquis and have had to replace fuses in both blocks. Hope this helps.

When I turn right or left, a moaning sound emanates from under the hood of my 1989 Mercury Marquis. Is my power steering pump failing? Where do I check the power steering fluid level?

The sound should indicate low fluid. Your power steering fluid should be red...may look black depending on how old. Your manual will tell you where to fill.

Steering is choppy / groans at startup

The first economical solution is to have a shop to change out the steering fluid and the filter to see if improved. If it os not then we can talk about the steering pump service. Good luck.

Sounds like the power steering pump failing. If it seems to be worse when you turn the wheel at a stop, it is time for a new p/s pump.

Squeeking at brake pedal

Yes that boot comes off. I would not mess with it. I would take a oil can and slide it under the boot and oil it. Or you can buy a new rod and stem that will work also. they are farely cheap and will already come pre-lubed
