Car will not let you take it out of park

My 1988 Lincoln Towncar will start, but I am unable to take it out of park. The only way I can put it in Drive is to Turn off the Engine, put on the Emergency Brake, put it in Neutral and then I am able to start the car and put it in Drive. What is wrong with this car?

Check your brake lights. Does all the brake lights works? If Not check for fuse or the brake switch on the brake pedal might have problem most of the time the cable connect to that switch is broken. I have this problem before and got it fixed. Good luck

It may be that the locking mech is not allowin you to take it out of park and so when you shut the car off and put it in neutral it allows you to put it in gear

under the dash, above the break peddle are two switches, check for adjustment of those switches . one is for the break lights and another one is for the solenoid what is locking your shifter.

Sounds like the safety switches are out of place or broken. The brake pedal lockout complete the start circuit. It was designed to do this to prevent runaways which is similar to your car going into reverse whenit should be locked in Park.

you need: spark plugs, spark plug wires, depending on if newer system that is all. if it is older you will also need rotor cap and rotor button. label the plug wires and change one plug and corosponding wire at a time after changing the (cap and button).make shure the plug wires go on the new cap in the same order that they came off.

1989 LINCOLN TOWNCAR LOST POWER SEEMED HAD IT

if you sqirt a little gas or starting fluid in tthe air intake and it starts for a few seconds then the igjition is probably ok since it was stored so long you could have lots of water int the gas tank or bad gas... you could have a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump . you can have a pressure/volume test done on the fuel pump.. that will also test the fuse and fuel filter .. wow only 54k miles ..

1997 Lincoln Towncar. Shifter stuck in park

There is a switch mounted on the arm of the brake pedal (under a plastic cover held on with 3 plastic push-pins). There is an electical connection attached to this switch. In my case one of the wires had broken and was not supplying electricity to the switch. By fixing the broken wire it allowed the shifter to properly move and got the brake lights working again.
