This transmission is a 700R4 overdrive automatic. When it does this it only means the overdrive is burned out, calling for trans removal and repair. It has to go into 3rd gear before it can go into overdrive and the trans will not allow it to because there is no longer an overdrive function. Try this first, Go to the connection at the throttle lever, find the black plastic piece that the trans cable runs thru, open the throttle completely by hand and hold it open, with a finger into the opening above the cable push the button down and this will reset the cable back to where the transmission has to reset it automatically. Now get in and take it for a drive starting out from neutral and drop it into the next forward gear, which will be high for overdrive use. Now that the cable has to be adjusted by the transmission, you may have what you need. IF it still doesn't have 3rd, and engine speed goes up like your in neutral, then you definitely have to have the tranny rebuilt ir replaced.

2000 ford expedition will not change gears after reaching 40mph then car goes into neutral. Then if i put the car into overdrive it runs fine.


The infamous Exploder transmission. Try a tranny flush and new gasket. More likely it needs a new transmission.

Over drive light goes on most of the time


IT SOUNDS LIKE THE OVERDRIVE SWITCH ITSELF NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.THE CONTACTS INSIDE ARE WORN OUT.

No overdrive


this is a hard mechanical fault in the overdrive forward clutch, u must overhaul the trans to fix this.

Most likely causes is the OD shift solenoid or less likely the VSS
