Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
It starts up fine runs for a few seconds an bogs down. Now before all of this it acted like it ran outta gas so i put gas in the car an still same. So i put a new fuel filter on and still same thing. So a buddy told me to try this (take spark plug wire off stick screw driver in it touch metal to see what color spark is he said if its blue crank sensor is good but if it sparks orangish red its bad) the spark was red so i replaced crank sensor and still the same problems

Disconnect the + wire Coils Take #1 Spark Plug Out Get a helper Use Compression Guage if not Available, Just put your finger over the Spark Plug Hole, have help BUMP the Starter over till You can Feel The Compression at your finger you need #1 at TOP DEAD CENTER on its Compression STROKE Fine tune it by using a STRAW in the Plug Hole to feel the PISTON Move UP To VERY TOP Dead center----------------------------------This is Tricky but don't Loose these Instructions------- If you have the OPTI_SPARK Ignition System My Books show all about it but Nothing on the Timing "MARK" as this is the step I Stoped at Above.. Coil Pack Ignition Will Have a Timing MARK On the Lower Harmonic Balancer. Point Being if Mark is NOT on the Degree Indicator It has JUMPED TIMING<< Surly on a Coil Pack Ignition System BUT
-------- The Opti Spark system if there is NO Timing Mark to Go by I Would Suggest Breaking Down and Letting A DEALER Handle it Unless You Can RULE that it HAS JUMPED TIME------------------------------------------------------------------------I Truly Hope I've shed some Light on Your Delima and this Leads you to a Smooth running Chevy. We found the problem by taking the truck to the dealership, after spending $550.00 on parts and having everything we could remove tested or we purchased them new and replaced them. We spent two weeks on it and took it to Chevrolet but it took them three days after all we had done, the problem turned out to be the gear on the distributor, sure we replaced every part in it but because we could not get the distributor out with the intake on it we had not even considered the gear, thanks for your assistance and maybe we'll try you again next time....Thanks again.

You could have a dirty EGR valve, you can re move it from the manifold and clean it with Throttle body cleaner. Might as well buy two cans, since your cleaning the EGR, might as well clean out the throttle body too.
Spray the throttle body cleaner in to the throttle body with the engine running and try to keep it at 1000 rpm and then to 1500 rpm as you clean out the throttle body and let it idle down for 2 min then turn the engine off. Then turn the engine to the run position for 10 seconds and start and let idle, ro for a test drive and hope that solved the problem, if not there a few more things we can do which will consist for tune up.
Note: Clean the EGR first so you don't burn your self since the engine would still be cool before you clean the Throttle body.
Good luck and keep me posted.
