Radiator fans not coming on. replaced thermostat and cooling sensor


Hi Bill, is the engine actually getting hot enough for the fans to come on? if the engine does have overheating problem (but you say the temp gauge reads normal) then i would check the operation of the engine temp switch, there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fans.

Vetra 1800 2004......temp gauge up and down,car seems to be running hot,only hot air out of vents,not heard fan come on 4 ages,any ideas?????


have your thermostat checked or remove it yourself car can run without it if it improves replace it with a new one these do sometimes get stuck ,if you do replace it always add antifreez to your water this also helps to keep your water and water jackets clean.

Coolant boiling after short drives but not showing any change on temp gauge or using any water


you could have a faulty temp gauge(air in the system) was my problem let it cooldown all the way....open radiator cap turn your heater on so water circulates all around the engine add coolant if needed it helps to gun the engine a little watch for flow of coolant then cap it.a closed thermosthat would also cause you car to overheat.

I didn't see a question, so let's play the guessing game.

Air temp?
Water temp?
Oil temp?
Trans temp?
Your temp?

Do you need to know how to mount a gauge to the dash?
Do you need to know where to run the power wire for gauge light?
Do you need to know where to install the sensor on intake and or engine?
Do you need to borrow some tools?

I feel better after unloading sarcasm.

Now, I'm going to assume it's water temp.

if it's electronic, you can just remove the stock sensor wire from on/near the waterneck/thermostat housing and plug in the new wire.

If it's mechanical, you will need to install the new probe into a port where it can contact the water.

On my old 3.8 (1997) I changed to an aftermarket waterneck that had a spot to screw in a temp probe.

On my 2003 gt, I haven't upgraded gauges yet, but the water sensor is on the front passenger side of the intake. I will add a pic of my gt so you can see the placement.

With this type, you can just add your wires to it (splice them in) and keep both the stock gauge & the aftermarket.
Or just remove the stock wire, then the stock sensor, then install the new stuff.
it's the black wire near the alternator. (almost center right of the pic to the right of the pink fuel injector)

i wonder if possibly a defective thermostat, that it is sticking open.
to bench test thermostat place in a pot,if you have a candy thermometer all the better ,place in cool water and bring to boil checking temp.it should open alittle at a time until being fully open at what ever temp it is rated at
then slowly add cold water and it should close in a similar fashion

High temp gauge and no heating


Let's don't say that it is the head gasket yet. There is a heater core that could be bad. First, replace the t'stat. When putting water/ antifreeze back into the car. Add the water to the outgoing hose of the radiator that feeds into the engine. This will insure you get water into the engine. Of course you will still add water to the radiator itself. Let the engine run while you are adding water. It won't overheat while you are doing this. If you do have a blown headgasket, you will have water in your oil. Does the gauge go to the red at low RPMs only? Lt me know what you find out.

Unfortunately No, All of the Guages run straight into the Computer. If you bypass them you will have error codes out the Wazzu and lights on the Dash Constantly. Try a Salvage yard for a Replacement Guage Cluster.

Coolant system


Hello there,

Either an air bubble, the thermostat or the water pump.
  • Air bubble (pocket) - Just because the radiator is full, doesn't mean the engine is. When an air bubble circulates through an engine it will cause the temp gauge to swing from hot (when water is in contact with the sensor) to cold ( when air is in contact). The less water, the hotter the engine. Easiest fix - add water.
  • Thermostat - Keeps water circulating in the engine separate from the water in the radiator until it gets to a certain temperature. At that point, it opens and allows the hot engine water and the cooler radiator water to cycle. Hot to radiator, cool to engine. As the cooler water flows over the thermostat, it closes, allowing the cycle to repeat. If it opens at the wrong temp, or not at all, your engine will overheat. Water will begin to boil. Steam will make the temp gauge swing erratically.
  • Water pump - If the water pump is failing (sometimes the impeller will come of the shaft), the water will not circulate. Same results.
Troubleshoot:
  • First and foremost: BE SAFE!!! Wear safety glasses. Start this with the engine cool. When you look in the radiator, do it from an angle and as far away as possible.
  • Have a hose or a couple two liter bottles full of water.
  • Take off the radiator cap. (Do not take off if engine is hot)
  • Is the water level low? If so, top it off.
  • Make sure the transmission is in either PARK or Neutral and set the parking brake.
  • Start the engine.
  • Observe the water level in the radiator. If it drops, top it off again.
  • At first it should do nothing. The water in the engine is still cool. The thermostat is closed. As the water in the engine heats up, the thermostat will begin to open. When it does, you will notice the water level begin to surge up and down.
  • Check your temp gauge. If the gauge getting close to the 'Red Zone', the thermostat should have begun cycling before now. Go back to the radiator and check it.
  • When (if) the thermostat finally opens all the way, the water will start moving as it cycles through the system. You will be able to tell the difference.
  • If you see the water flowing, the water pump is ok.
  • If the water does not start to move and the gauge is getting close to 'Red', shut the engine down and let it cool. Do not put your face near the radiator. If the thermostat suddenly let go, The hot water, driven by steam, could erupt out of the filler hole. Replace thermostat. Rerun this test. If results are the same, replace water pump.
  • Does the water level drop at this point (air bubble)? If so, top it off while it's circulating. Adding cold water will close the thermostat. Be prepared to wait through the cycling two or three times.
  • Check the temp gauge again. Has it leveled off?
  • When you don't need to add water any more, put the cap back on. Observe the temp gauge for a few more minutes. has it stopped the erratic behavior? If so, it was an air bubble and it's gone. If not, replace the thermostat.
