I dont know what kind of vehicle you are talking about but if you are somewhat mechanically inclined they are usually very easy to remove. couple bolts and two or three wires to disconnect. depending on where your started is located, it can take ten minutes or even hours if you have to remove other parts to get to it

How do I change starter on 2005 buick rendezvous. Just changed battery. Still turns over sluggishly.

Your starter draws the heaviest current of any electrical load in the car and even though all other devices are working properly, any resistance in the starter circuit can be a problem.

When your battery was changed, the terminal connections were no doubt inspected, but corrosion can often find it's way under the insulation and up along the cable. Pull the battery connections off again and check the cables carefully.

All the best.

Where is the starter located on 95 dodge dakota engine. I need to change one and am not very mechanical.

hi, to locate the starter follow the big live lead from the battery this will go onto the selenoid on the starter motor the starter looks like a small cylinder this is the selenoid next to a big cylinder the size of a big beer can, so just follow the main live wire and it will go towards the bottom of the engine and then it goes to the starter the starter will have 2 wires going to it the thick red live wire and a smaller push fit wire.

let me know if you have problems finding it and ill do my best to assist you further ok

My Jeep won't start, was working fine earlier today. Won't turn over just a clackety clack sound, is it the starter?

Well to start with, it does sound like the starter is on the way out, best to test, give it a push and try to start in 2nd gear if starting ok the starter is gone, needs changing, could be a low battery as well check the voltage output on it, could put jumper leads on, if starting it is battery, if not it's starter.

The starter on my 1987, 4 cylander, pontiac Fiero is not working. Power goes to it, but it won't work. I need to know how to change this. Is it possible to do myself? What is the best way to access the...

If it's not spinning when battery voltage is applied, it will most likely need to be replaced.
  1. Jack up rear of car.
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  3. Put car on jack stands.
  4. Laying under the car from the rear, the starter will be on the drivers side towards the front of the car. (Looks like a metal can, has I believe 2 bolts holding it to the engine.)
  5. Disconnect all the wires going to the starter.
  6. Remove the bolts holding it to the engine.
  7. It is HEAVY, be careful not to drop it on yourself.
  8. There should be shims between the starter and the engine. DO NOT LOSE them, and remember where they were so you can reinstall them on the new starter. ENGINE/STARTER damage can occur if not reinstalled!
  9. If you have another vehicle take the starter with you to an Auto Parts store, most of them will test the part for free. If it is bad, you already have it there so you won't have to pay a core charge.
  10. Reverse procedure to reinstall.

Started motor problems on Toyota Camry 2000

You need a new starter bendix, or a whole starter. Best do it soon before you tear the teeth of the flex plate. Once you do that you have to pull the transmission to change it.

1989 Econoline 351 started the van today and the starter motor stuck, then later today the van was dead. It has no power at all. The battery is new the ignition module is new. I am stuck. Andrew

If the starter motor remained engaged when you released the key, the underlying cause is likely a bad starter solenoid (first item the positive battery cable connects to after the battery) Remaining engaged, can damage the starter itself. Replace the solenoid, check the starter and you should be finished. (Or also replace the starter if it was damaged)
If the starter was stuck and not engaging, the bendix drive inside the starter has failed...In that case it's best to change the starter as even though it's replaceable, generally by the time it needs replacement the starter is worn in other areas and would need complete overhaul.

did you check your starter bcuz your car has a seloniond on the starter you can try jumping the car and bypassing it but your best bet is to take your starter off and take to autozone or advance auto and see if its still any good and if it aint thats your problem

Need to remove and replace starter, would like to be able to see a diagram

Your best diagram is the starter itself...make notes on where wires are attached and what you removed from where. Always remove the positive cable from battery before you begin and never allow wires on one starter terminal to touch ones from adjacent terminal when you replace them.
Remember...your starter turns the engine so it can does not start your engine. Always have your battery charged and load tested to avoid changing the starter because the battery is bad.
