Question about 2001 Kia Spectra

2001 Kia Spectra Problems

I have this 2001 Kia Spectra that has just over 100k miles. From a cold start, it idles at 2500 rpms (supposed to idle at around 900). Which cause the transmission to slam into gear. Now when you get out the driveway and going down the road, at 55 mph it is supposed to run around 2100 rpm but instead runs around 2500, wasting fuel. When the car finally gets warmed up it feels like it drops into the last gear and runs normally after that. Also after the car is warmed up it will start up and idle at the normal 900 rpm and run completely normal. i can also smell gas when i start the car in the morning (from a cold start). and the final little detail of this money pit of a car, is that i can hear a sucking or squirting noise coming from just on the other side of the firewall. It mainly happens from a cold start or when you stomp on the gas. The sucking/squirting noise sounds almost like air traveling through a line or liquid being squirted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with this car model but i would presume that the engine is linked with an automatic choke for cold starting and the revs should go down as the engine starts to heats up. this probably works on a vacuum system based around your inlet manifold, and the noise your hear could be a leak in the vacuum pipe. you should pop your hood before starting and try listening for that noise to pin point it's location. if your lucky you might just find a small crack in a pipe that can be replaced with ease. of coarse first thing in the morning would be the best time to check this when the engine is cold.it's worth giving it a go and i hope you get it sorted, good luck

SOURCE: My KIA 200 Sportage has a recurring problem

manufacturer decided they wanted a unique system of fuel injection, at least different then that of most systems. The control valve may act up and not allow fuel to inject at intervals. Instead, it may take be clogged with debri, gunk, and other trash which needs to be serviced in a shop to be repaired. One very common activity with your fuel injector is it may cause the valve to stay closed and burn gas in a manner that is inconsistent with normal gas usage, the vehicle will start to blow out black and dark smoke out the rear end, trick your cars oxygen sensor, and allow the system to burn a larger amount of fuel for the same mileage. This problem needs to be solved in a shop where the equipment is available to make adjustments and flush out your system.

With the motor running and the engine hood UP, stand near the driver's front wheel and look down below where you would add the brake fluid. You will see a black rubber handle. That's the dipstick for the transmission fluid. Remove the dipstick WITH THE CAR RUNNING, wipe the stick and replace it. Pull it out again and see where the fluid is on the stick. If there is no fluid on the stick you need to add at least two quarts of DEXRON III transmission fluid. It takes a special funnel and goes into the transmission where you took the dipstick out. They can help you at the parts store if you need help getting the transmission fluid back to the correct level. i have run my transmission very low many times and adding fluid always puts it back in shape.

If the fluid is okay, turn off the key and look up near the battery. Just below the air filter and battery area near the top of the transmission is a shift lever than controls the different gears that puts the transmission into gear. There's a big cable attached to it. Have someone shift through the gears with the CAR OFF and make sure you can feel that lever moving and you can see the cable pulling the lever into logical click positions. If it is shifting into the positions and you have fluid in the transmission you will need a transmisison shop to look at the car because you may have a bad electronic device that controls the transmisison or some internal transmission failure.

Cooling fan problems

Hi Dave the ECU receives messages from sensors, one of which is a temperature sensor. When the sensor responds to a temp higher than the normal operating temp the fans are then and only then supposed to operate. They will switch in for a brief period and then turn off again. The idle speed is in direct relation to the cold start up idle requirements and specifications. When the engine is cold the idle speed will automatically increase and as the engine achieves operating temp, the idle speed will decrease inthe way you have recorded. If you start the engine and allow it to idle until normal temp is achieved the fan should cut in. The way you've desribed all systems are A okay!. Regards John

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm

Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.
Let me know.

Above 2500 rpms, loses power on acceleration

Did you check the plug gap on the new plugs? Did you also replace spark plug wires? The stock ones are ok, but typically replacing them with a decent aftermarket wire (along with the plugs) makes a world of difference.

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
