Question about 2002 Audi A6

Shift Lock Solenoid has (had) me locked in Park in my 2002 A6

After I removed the woodgrain cover around my Shift Lever, I finally (after a few hours) found a little while bypass button that allow the shifter to move out of Park when the button is depressed. I have been driving around for 2 weeks with a screw driver bunge-corded in my console pressing this button. The audi dealer says this is a $900+ repair.

What part has failed, the solenoid? What parts do I need, and can I fix this myself? The dealer says this is an enclosed part and you have to replace the entire shift mechanism? Help!

Ok what breaks on most of these shift interlock shifter ***. is where the interlock cable attaches to the shifter assy. chrysler has the same prob. cheap stuff. no i don't think you can fix it as when it was new it already was junk. call a junk yard or try to get one off ebay. and yes they are very easy to replace. goodluck

There is no module on the brake pedal . There is a brake switch , do the brake lights work ? If the brake lights work switch is ok .

During remote start operation, the BCM will de-energize the shift lock control circuit, locking the shift lever in the PARK position.

Holden cruze 2009 key stuck in the ignition won't go to off position , can't get it out of park .What is the problem ?


Is it shifter on the floor ?
Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control actuator , and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

GM had problems with these ! Has a TSB - technical service bulletin !

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Voltage flows through the normally closed contacts of the automatic transmission shift lock control switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to be move out of the PARK position.

Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement .

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid receives a ground from the BCM. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is energized, the shift lever mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the PCM sends a class 2 serial data message to the BCM. The BCM turns OFF the ground control circuit and this de-energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is de-energized, the shift lever may be moved out of the PARK position. The BCM determines transaxle shift lever position through a class 2 serial data message from the PCM. The PCM receives inputs from the park/neutral position switch and determines shift lever position. When the BCM receives this information and determines that the shift lever is out of the PARK position, the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground is opened.

Circuit/System Description
The body control module (BCM) controls the shift lock solenoid by providing battery voltage to the shift lock control solenoid. The BCM utilizes a smart driver to control the voltage supplied to the shift lock solenoid. The smart driver monitors the voltage and current flow of the control circuit.
Diagnostic Aids
• Use a scan tool to verify there are no brake pedal position sensor and/or transmission internal mode switch (IMS) DTCs set that could cause the BCM not to provide battery voltage to the A/T shift lock solenoid.
• If the automatic transmission shift lock control circuit is shorted to battery positive voltage, the A/T shift lock solenoid will be inoperative. The vehicle will shift out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal.
Your best bet is have it towed to a repair shop !

This morning it started fine but will not come out of gear and my airbag light is on. Someone said it was the fuse but I am not sure which fuse. Any ideas ?


I am mechanic I really need to no more make ect. but it could be battery or the ignition switch or ignition lock n key but like I said need more information this is a guess that I told you

When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.

Abs light on wont shift out of park


Hi Judy , what kind of vehicle do you have ? Year an model ? ABS light has nothing to do with it not coming out of park . Problem with automatic transmission shift lock control ! Probably !

Cannot shift from park


If you are really stuck you can remove the shifter cover and you will see the solenoid, at the base of the solenoid is a manual override - press this and you can move the shifter - then do not return it to park until you have fixed the problem ( leave in neutral) Hope this helps - good luck.

My 2002 ZX2 Automatic's sifter doesn't want to shift out of park. Once I get it out of park it drives fine. Any suggestions?


The park lock-out solenoid is bad. It locks the shifter in park until you depress the brake pedal. You can remove the console and replace this solenoid or defeat it with a zip-tie.
