i have a bmw318iSE e46 engine, the battery light comes on and the rev counter will jump sometimes just a little bit other times to 3k, i brought this car to a bmw dealership and they ran a diagnostic test on it and nothing showed up, i went to a few independent dealers and they told me its the alternator or the cam or crank shaft sensors so any help appreciated

- There is no problem with the charging system ie the battery or the alternator, the problem is to do with the crank shaft sensor and it is common in the E46's
Hi, i got a 316i SE (reg in 2000). Same probelm as above. I cant start my car, rev counter jumps up and down hysterically. I took my car to garage, carried out ECU tests no faults found. then we decided to send the ECU unit to specialist to have alook at it yet again no problem found. I am not quite sure where to go from here. The car has been off the road for more than two weeks now (Feb 2009). Please advise

-   My battery light went on when I was on the highway, pushing the bimmer tacking over 4 gran... the light has stayed on ever since.
The car starts fine and no other "electrical" problems with the radio, AC or locks.
As stated above, the crank sensor, seems the most logical.
Where is it located?-   bigbobash

oNCE THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON, IT MEANS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH UR CHARGING SYSTEM. mOST LIKELY THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH UR ALTERNATOR. u SHOULD LIAISE WITH AN AUTO-ELECTRICIAN

BMW 318i e46 engine 1998cc. Gearbox does not seem to engage fully when engine is cold in the mornings. Car only moves forward very slowly and only becomes normal after about one to two minutes of engine revving.
