BMW E46 battery light and rev counter

I have a bmw318iSE e46 engine, the battery light comes on and the rev counter will jump sometimes just a little bit other times to 3k, i brought this car to a bmw dealership and they ran a diagnostic test on it and nothing showed up, i went to a few independent dealers and they told me its the alternator or the cam or crank shaft sensors so any help appreciated

Hi, i got a 316i SE (reg in 2000). Same probelm as above. I cant start my car, rev counter jumps up and down hysterically. I took my car to garage, carried out ECU tests no faults found. then we decided to send the ECU unit to specialist to have alook at it yet again no problem found. I am not quite sure where to go from here. The car has been off the road for more than two weeks now (Feb 2009). Please advise

There is no problem with the charging system ie the battery or the alternator, the problem is to do with the crank shaft sensor and it is common in the E46's

My battery light went on when I was on the highway, pushing the bimmer tacking over 4 gran... the light has stayed on ever since.

The car starts fine and no other "electrical" problems with the radio, AC or locks.

As stated above, the crank sensor, seems the most logical.

    Where is it located?

ONCE THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON, IT MEANS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH UR CHARGING SYSTEM. mOST LIKELY THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH UR ALTERNATOR. u SHOULD LIAISE WITH AN AUTO-ELECTRICIAN

check the condition and tension of the drive belt. Check that the battery terminals and posts are shiny clean and tight. Have the battery load tested for faulty cells. Have the alternator tested for output

I have a 2001 (Y) BMW 318ise e46. when i start the car i have less than 1000rpm, and when setting off it judders and bucks with very little power. When in 3rd gear it seems to be ok but it wont go above...

The engine is misfiring, probably needs a good tune up or a large vacume leak. Scan the engine for codes since the engine light is on and it will tell you the problems.

1992 GTI, Mk2, 2L(2E) 8valve. Engine cuts out sometimes when car comes to a halt and has to idle, this occurs whether the engine is hot or cold and anytime of the day or night. Another thing i noticed...

Hi

the cause wil be the air mass meter also known as the air mass sensor, when this fails the car struggles for air and hence cuts out, this is made worse when the lights are on at night as the car will be trying to compensate the failed air sensor with more power so it will **** more power from the battery to keep the engine running, when you put the lights on it wil make it harder for the altenator to provide power to everything at once, very common fault on this car.

Hi i have a 99 323i e46 i drove it home today and i pushed it to its limit but then the car started to **** and lose power and you could feel the car vibrating inside the cabin. the engine light came on...

Several things but 2 occur to me. did it have ample oil and water, and, did it do this while the rev counter was up high?. The first you can sort, the second, it probably has a rev limiter over which , the engine will not go. Slow it down a bit and it it should be back to normal.

Rev counter jumps whilst idling and then engine cuts out

Your problem sounds as if the thermo sensor....which controls the air fuel ratio when engine is cold....is faulty. It is a common fault on this model.
This is not an expensive part, and takes only a short time to fit.
Good luck
