Question about 2006 Toyota Fortuner 3,0

1 Answer

Toyota Fortuner 3.0 D4D overheating

I had the timing belt and water pump(slight leak) replaced at 160000km and since then the engine has been overheating when under load. I tow a boat and have to be very watchful of the temperature gauge, under normal driving conditions it is ok, could it be that the water pump is not the original. The radiator and head gasket has been pressure tested, no problem. I am not using any water so no leaks.

SOURCE: toyota pickup antifreeze leak around timing belt cover

You won't really know until you can see the bottom of the pump. Most pumps have a "weep" hole where coolant will leak from if the seal goes bad. It can leak and still function without symptoms until the bearing goes.

3.0 d4d fortuner not stating,it gives me p1604 fault code

For a Toyota, it indicates a startability problem, it is a very vague diagnostic troubleshoot code and therefore not component specific.

Components to check, Crank Shaft Position sensor, Spark Plugs, MAF sensor, fuel pump... etc.

3.0 D4D overheating

Check between the Air con condensor & radiator for grass etc... (restriction of air flow) if no restriction remove the thermostat & replace. If there is grass do not try to remove with water you will need to remove the radiator & pick it out bit by bit or use soft brush (dustpan brush) & compressed air or soft (not to hot) flame & burn to ash then blow with air. ALWAYS Blow from engine side & remove from other side so you don't force it further in. (This can take hours but is quite a common problem)

Hi, I own a 3.0 d4d toyota fortuner (same engine as 3.0 d4d hilux) and as of yesterday it started belching white smoke. it starts and idles perfectly fine, the exhaust just smells off. not like unburnt...

White smoke on diesel engines, means water in combustion chamber. Blue smoke means oil.
In what condition was the filter you removed? How bad? Temperature issues? Missing coolant maybe? If yes, you might as well have an internal leak. Some gasket maybe. Check all you vital fluids levels. If anything missing, take the time to empty the engine oil on a can, and check the colour. If it will look like chocolate brown, then you do have a leak from the inside.
