Question about 1996 Ford Explorer
While stopped at a red light, the explorer chugged its last. I cranked it again several times and while I have full and strong power (new alternator) it chugs once and sounds flooded and doesn't fire up. I pushed it from the intersection and am going to get it fixed today. Co-workers say fuel pump, others say carburetor. . . I have no idea.
What are the possible issues I will face and how much will this cost? I can't afford anything outrageous.
TWO YEARS AGO THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED MY FUEL PUMP REPLACED I SAID FORGET I WILL DO IT MYSEL (IM A 50 YEAR OLD GANDMA SO I GOT UNDER THE TRUCK A RADIO TALK SHOW SAID TO TAP IT WITH A RUBBER MALLOT AROUND THE THE FUEL TANK SO I DID IT DINT WORK SO I REACHED MY HAND OVER THE FUEL TANK AND FELT THE PLUG I UNPLUGGED IT AND PLUGGED IT BACK IN IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND STILL HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS! I WAS THRILLED GIVE IT A SHOT I THINK THE PLUG MUST HAVE BEEN LOOSE OR NOT GETTING A GOOD GROUND CONNECTION. GOOD LUCK

It's hard to say exactly without more info but out of the two you mentioned the fuel pump is the only option because your explorer is fuel injected and therefore has no carb.
Using the info you gave the fuel pump is the place to start looking but there are other things it could be. The coil, (actually any combination of ignition parts) fuel filter, ECM (computer) a bad sensor, ect...... But if you are taking it to a trusted/reputable garage your repair should be quick and tolerable (till you get the bill...lol)
As for the cost,It's hard to say without knowing what the problem is.
I hope i was informative and good luck with your repair!
