Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

96 Explorer Won't Keep Running

While stopped at a red light, the explorer chugged its last. I cranked it again several times and while I have full and strong power (new alternator) it chugs once and sounds flooded and doesn't fire up. I pushed it from the intersection and am going to get it fixed today. Co-workers say fuel pump, others say carburetor. . . I have no idea.

What are the possible issues I will face and how much will this cost? I can't afford anything outrageous.

To pull and replace the fuel pump is 600-800? Is this something a mechanically inclined person can do or is this a take-the-whole-car-apart kind of situation?

It's hard to say exactly without more info but out of the two you mentioned the fuel pump is the only option because your explorer is fuel injected and therefore has no carb.
Using the info you gave the fuel pump is the place to start looking but there are other things it could be. The coil, (actually any combination of ignition parts) fuel filter, ECM (computer) a bad sensor, ect...... But if you are taking it to a trusted/reputable garage your repair should be quick and tolerable (till you get the bill...lol)
As for the cost,It's hard to say without knowing what the problem is.
I hope i was informative and good luck with your repair!

Well carbis out due to this being throttle body. Fuel pump is more like your culprit. Approx 600-800 to repair.

The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and you must drop the tank and pull the pump out through the top. No easy task if tank is full.

Have the fault codes read again and get the code numbers so that we can identify if possible the causes for your problem. IN most codes recorded there are a list of possible causes for example if he said possible crank position sensor=== there is also the cam position sensor --wiring --ECM--HO2S sensor --MAF/MAP/VAF sensors that come into the equation

Bad sounds, bad smells from 94 ford explorer

Sounds like you may have a vacuum line off or ruptured going to the EGR valve. The burning smell is probably the catalytic converter. When the engine runs rich you will get a sulfur smell that smells sort of like rotten eggs.
