SOURCE: Knocking inside left rear panel
It is possible that this may be your electronic fuel pump cycling on off to maintain fuel pressure. It may be an indication that the fuel pump is on its way out.... Have you done a trouble shoot with an auto manual specific for your Explorer yet? There should be a process of elimination guide or chart to help isolate the problem.
Hope that helps...=)

The blend door (mode door ) is a very common issue there is even an associated TSB t(technical service bulletin) it has to do with the blend door becoming warped and binding the accuator. In an opened or semi-closed position

Sometimes collapsed lifters or loose rocker arms can cause knocking sounds in an engine. However, the fact that there was a possible loss of oil pressure and that the knocking gets louder as the rpm's increase, would indicate that there is damage to a connecting rod bearing and possibly the crankshaft. If the latter is the case you are looking at a fairly substantial repair bill.
