It could be but it could also be that you need shims or it couuld have been a bad bindix drive witch they could test on a machine and putting a load on the drive

Why would my car make a loud grinding noise like it is already started when i go to start it?

This done by the same person/shop? Fly wheels can be put on backwards. This not only bad for the starter/flywheel, but bad for the torque converter and transmission pump. just a note. If the flywheel was backwards, They knew it when the bolted the torque converter to it.

Starter problems with my 91 chevy cavlier

There are shims that go between the starter and the block. If it grinds because it is too tight in the flywheel you need to add a shim.

1986 Ford Ranger starter problems

it could be the battery and if not enough power is going to starter it will not ingage fully engage and cause slight wear on teeth...Now over years teeth will wear on flywheel but should be ok if none are missing....the freely turning on flywheel is incorrect also....it is hard to turn either way...would have battery checked first....hope this helps....

2003 Lincoln Navigator starter grinding when starting

If you mean the starter grinds from time to time and won't crank the engine when it happens, the problem could be a bad spot on the flywheel and/or a faulty starter. The starter uses a magnet and bendix gear to push the starter gear into the flywheel. If the magnet or bendix is weak, the gear will not engage and can damage the teeth on the flywheel.
You need to have the starter removed and check the flywheel teeth for damage.

1999 m cougar 2.5 v6 auto. the starter grinds it usually takes about 5 or 6 trys to start the car. a shop told me it was the fly wheel but i jacked up the car and there are no teeth missing on the fly...

Teeth may not be missing on the flywheel, but they are supposed to be a certain thickness and the teeth may have worn too thin to mesh correctly.

Some cars also use shims to change the angle in which the starter contacts the flywheel. You may want to check with a local auto parts store to see if a new starter comes with shims.

Grinding starter on my 1988 Ford Bronco II

the sound you hear is the starter grinding against broken teeth on the flywheel, for that to be repaired the flywheel on the vehicle will need to be replaced.

Got a new starter but it stilll won't run.

Yes the transmission has to come out to replace the flywheel. An depending on how nice the shop will be to you, the labor hours can be 4 to 6 billable hours plus parts. What ever the going shop rate is where you live. 90$ + per hour. It mre than likely has damaged teeth on the ring gear. The factory had a spacer/shim around the nose of the starter. Did you have to deal with that when you replaced the starter> They very often don't get reinstalled and are a bit of a pain to get into place properly. Without the shim the spacing would not be proper and possibly cause premature wear to starter and or Ring Gear.

My starter

The flywheel doesn't usually grind into the flywheel it's usually the other way around. The starter upon trying to crank the engine over will make a grinding noise. This is the sign of a bad starter drive in the starter and it will need a new starter. The longer you wait on getting this repaired the more damage will be done to the flywheel and this is a very costly repair because the motor and transmission needs to be seperated apart from each other to pull the flywheel out and replaced.
Hope this helps keep, us posted.
