if you have one it is either inside of the radiator or attached externally to the front of the radiator. follow the 2 lines from the transmission to the motor and it should lead you to the cooler.
Remove the old line get a length of straight 3/8" steel tubing from parts store and you must bend the new bulk line to the shape of the old line, you can also patch the old like where is damaged with rubber cooler hose (do not use fuel line)..
normally external coolers dont have a flow direction on them that I have ever seen.. you just mount it up front and attatch the lines and go...if there is a flow indicator(tho I cant imagine why) then I would see which line bleeds monentarily on startup and shutdown, and connect it accordingly...
Transmission or torque convertor. The Dakotas have had a lot of problems. Our 2005 trans is in the process a complete rebuild right now due to a failure of a trans oil cooler line. The leak starved the planetary gears of fluid, causing them to seize up.
A500 & A518 Overdrive Automatics (and the 904, 727 and other variants) run the Transmission Cooler Lines out of the Left side of the Transmission, near the Shifter Linkage & Kickdown linkage.
The lines then run along the side of the transmission, along the side of the engine oil pan, to the bottom tank of the radiator (or external cooler, if the truck had an external cooler installed).
