With the dash and dome lights going off, it doesn't sound anything like a timing belt, or chain problem. I am leaning more towards a loose or corrode wire either coming off the battery to the starter, or a bad ground in the starter causing a similar noise as a chain. I would start by checking all the fuses, under dash and under the hood. The dome lights and dash lights are probably on the same fuse. If the starter shorts out it can cause a few different things to short out as well. You haven't mentioned if the car does turn over or not. , now I will say that if you have a motor with a double over head cam, and the timing chain or belt breaks, it will bind the valves and do damage to the engine., but I cannot say that it could effect the lights. They are not connected in any way, but the starter can cause this. I hope I was of some help, keep me informed

Hello, sorry to hear you are having problems with your G6. It's either security related or engine computer problems...most likely it is the engine management. (that silver box by the coolant bottle) You can try resetting the security by locking your doors from the inside, and then unlocking them with the key...alarm should cycle. on and off. If that don't work, try disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes, then touch the cables together before you reinstall...that will clear the memory...it's a long shot, but worth a try...Usually the reprogramming of the ECM (as long as the BCM is working) is required to correct the issues. Unfortunately, this takes dealer software.
I hope this helps & good luck with the car.
