Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Pajero

Open Question

Pajero 2002 (auto) 4X4 making noise

Hi, it has been making a noise for 2 weeks now,it starts when driving along, sounds like pads low on disks, so i changed the pads and put new ones in. the noise went away for 2 days. now its back again. yesterday i was driving and noticed that the diff lock orange light came on on the dash and was flashing, even thou it was still in 2high. i also noticed with the noise, that when i slow to a stop the noise gets louder and starts to sound like teeth on a cogg not quite engaging, then just as i stop it goes donk. then when i pull away again, the noise is gone, but soon to return. PS. the orange light is not always on when the noise appears. thanks in advance Pete

SOURCE: 4x4 indicator light flashes continuesly

Hi, on the front axle is the actuator for the free wheel hub. This actuator works with vacuum. You will need to establish if you have sufficient vacuum on the actuator. You should have vacuum on one side of the actuator in 4x2 mode and then the vacuum should change to the other side when 4x4 mode is selected. If your vacuum is fine and the actuator moves far enough, then you should look at the freewheel sensor situated on the front diff. The sensor might be faulty which gives the control unit the wrong info.

SOURCE: Blinking Center Diff Light while vehicle on the move.

The pajero has a limp mode for when there is an issue with the 4x4 system. The ECU apparently limits the vehicles capabilities until the problem is fixed. By turning the car off and on again you are reseting the fail-safe until it again triggers. The fault may be that a part of the drive train, secondary transfer case or auto locking hubs is not working correctly. For my Pajero, the auto hubs were not disengaging. This was later found to be caused by sticking air solendoids. Each solenoids cost was about $200 and there are two for the hubs. I was able to free them up by soaking the solenoids in CRC/ WD40 and a bit inside the air tubes as well plus repeatedly engaging and disengaging the 4x4 lever to activate the hubs. The auto hubs may not be the issue in your case but its worth a try.

2000 Mazda B4000 4x4 rattling noise from front of vehicle

Check all the plastic cowlings and air dams to make sure they are not loose and rattling in the wind when you drive down the road. Check the exhaust system for any broken or loose hangers. Hope this helps.

2002 ram 1500 5,9 4x4 hesitates and makes a banging noise when it finally switches back into 2 wheel drive

While the driveshaft and u-joint suggestions all sound like good places to start, because of the way you describe, I have a few questions. Is the truck stock? Height, tire size, did you change hubs etc...? Do you take the truck off road? In mud, sand trails...? Do you ploiw or tow? Do you maintain the driveline according to the useage? Is the hesitation due to it getting stuck in neutral (in the transfer case)? Does the truck make the same noises shifting into neutral or 4 whl hi to low? Are you moving when you shift it? If you come top a complete stop, shift trans to neutral, shift from 4x4 to 4x2, does that change anything? Any other info would be helpful to try and narrow the issue.

How to use the 4x4

well, if you are sitting still it is recommended you put vehicle in neutral and select 4x4 indicator to desired posistion..... 4 high...4 low...or 2high (auto) when you select 4 low the top speed is not to exceed 25 mph. It is a very low gear for crawling or pulling. At any time you need 4 low gear you must stop trk, shift to neutral and select 4 low. The same procedure is done to change from 4 low to 4 hi or 2 hi. if not done this way internal trans, transfer case or driveline failure will occure. At any time you may shift 4x4 selector from (auto) or 2 hi to 4 hi, and 4 hi to 2 hi or( auto).****** But note, do not make shifts while tires are spinning or under power (acceleration)******* While driving you can make shifts at any speed between 2 hi (auto) and 4 hi and back to 2 hi. release throttle a little and select. you do not have to take foot off throttle all the way! just enough that truck is not under a power, load acceleration. If tires are spinning or you are on the gas and you select gears from 2 & 4 high the posibilities of severe damage can result. Also note that 4x4 is not recommended on dry pavement. When 4x4 is being used also take care as to the handling and the steering characteristics change, On tight turns the front wheels will bind and possibly **** a little. If you have never had a 4x4 before, obey what i have told you untill you get the experiance and you will be fine. HAPPY TRAILS.... AND A LITTLE 4X4 FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2002 Passat V6 Wagon and the brakes and rotors were replaced (aftermarket parts) about 3 months ago. The CV boots were replaced 2 weeks ago. When I apply the brakes, about 3/4 of the way down,...

Check and see if the Brake Pads were re-installed with all the hardware, ie, Anti-Rattle Clips, shims etc. if your pads are not secure in the Calipers it will cause the pads to rattle when you are driving in effect causing your brakes to make weird noises, ie, groaning, squealing, rattling.

High pitch rubbing sound front brake/wheel area at low speed approx 15-20 MPH. Intermittent problem happens more in hotter climates but does also happen at lower temps also (65 deg) If I slam the brakes...

check your brake pads to make sure they're not wasted. sometimes the high pitch sound is the brake pad warning indicator scraping on the rotor. if that's the case replace immediately and inspect your rotor for damage. Also check the dust shield to make sure it's not rubbing as well.
