Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero
Follow the top radiator hose to where it goes into the engine. Follow that until you reach the part shaped like a dome usually held onto the engine with two bolts. The thermostat is under the dome. You have to drain some of the coolant into a pan by removing the radiator drain plug, then you can remove the two dome bolts and replace the thermostat. You have to put the new thermostat facing the same way as the old, and with a new gasket or o-ring. Of course wait for the engine to cool before don't this.

open your fuse panel, and hold down the "reset" key
turn your key to on,
push the pedal three times, and on the third time hold, should hear a series of beeps, and the light should go out

SOURCE: license plate bulb 99 alero
remove the 2 license lamp screws from outside,above the lic.plate then from insidethe trunk pull up the lic.lamp housing and replace the bulb.it should pull straight out

Lol, you are funny. Can the car be driven to Autozone or another parts supplier that provides free scanning. There really is no way to find out why the light is on until the code/s are read.
It would also help if you could give more info about the repair. Was anything else checked (water-pump, fan, radiator, and condition of the antifreeze)? Is the antifreeze res. still full? let me know.

FOLLOW THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE TO THE ENGINE TO LOCATE THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING WHICH IS LOCATED AT THE END OF THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD ON THE DRIVER SIDE.
