SOURCE: diagram for replacing distributor, cap, rotor...

Replace the coil. It is shorted out. I have changed quite a few coils for the exact same symptom.

The graciousness of a FixYa rating for my assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

I suggest you have the injectors tested by the dealer, the sludge buildup will not cause a miss fire. to clean the throttle body use carberator spray while holding the engine idle high.

1994 GMC 1500 Sierra 4.3 will not start acted like out of time so I replaced cap rotor plugs check plug wires .also replaced timing chain and gears even though no problem also changed ecm any ideas

The distributor gear. It wears down and causes rough idling to no start. Pull the distributor, look where the rotor button is pointing as it needs to go in the exact same position. you can get just the gear and replace it. it is held in by a drive pin. Push it out and swap gears and reuse the drive pin. hammer it in.

I have a 94' gmc sierra 4x4 1500 z71 then it won't start after i touched the distributor cap actually i replaced it. the parts look the same so i thought it was the coil then i did bt still no...

If all you did was replace the distributor cap and now it won't start. Either the cap is the wrong one, or it is faulty, take it back to where you bought it and have it replaced for another one. Make sure it is the correct one for your model.
When you took the cap off, did you remove the rotor button also? If so did you remember to put it back, don't laugh it is a common mistake.
Something else to check is that all the plug wires are snug in the distributor cap. Test this by pushing down on the actual wires and not the caps. Some times they don't go in far enough.
A couple of other things to check in the cap is for 'tracking/arcing' you will see this by taking the cap off and looking inside it and if it is tracking you will see a what looks like a hairline crack, this is from the electrical charge arcing out.
Check the little carbon rod that sits in the top of the distributor cap make sure it springs in and out and isn't broken.

I have a 97 gmc sierra Z71. Im having trouble starting it in the morning and after its been sittin a couple of hours.

is your check engine light on to start with . have you had a tune up done on it you could have fouled pluggs or bad spark plugg wires or if it has coil packs over eack plugg you might have a bad coil on onr of more plugs . i have a 2006 chevy silverado and still have a distributor so if you have one make sure to get a new rotor and cap does your truck idle funny or does it feel like ther is a bump in the idle like it isnt smooth. also you might need to clean out the throttle body theye can get fouled in side get a can of throttlebody cleaner and a rag and clean out around the butterfly vavle.hope this helps

My 2003 gmc v6 just had its plugs and wires and distributor cap and button changed and i put the distributor button on wrong, it ran fine 4 a mon. or 2 and one of the screws came out of the button and...

The distributor cap and/or the ignition rotor most likely have a crack somewhere and the distributor cap should be replaced along with the ignition rotor. The ignition module could have been damaged as well as the ignition pick-up coil/stator and if replacing the distributor cap and ignition rotor does not solve the problem then the ignition module or the pick-up coil/stator assembly inside of the distributor is also most likely damaged and the distributor will need to be replaced. There is a certain procedure for removing and replacing the distributor, and the ignition timing is not adjustable and it is not set using a timing light or with the engine running, and if you do have to replace the distributor Let me know if you require the procedure to properly remove and replace the distributor or if you require any further assistance.
