Take the rubber boot off the gear shift inside the vehicle and lift it up, exposing the area where the gear shift and the transmission connect.

Look for the shift cable and the shifting arm. A single bolt and nut connect the shift cable and shift arm.

Twist the nut connecting the gear shift and the transmission. Use a socket wrench and remove the gear shift. Use an open-end wrench to loosen the nut holding the shift cable and the shift arm together.

Slide off the sleeve on the shift cable and loosen the shift cable at the other end with an open-end wrench. Both ends of the shifting cable attach to the shifting arm in different locations.

Hitch the new shift cable to the 2 anchor points on the shift arm using the same bolts and nuts. Reconnect the gear shift to the transmission and push the rubber boot back into place around the gear shift inside the car.

Test the functionality of the shifting cable by moving the gear shift in and out of gear.

Go to eBay and search for a saturn shifter bushing kit. these are less than 20 bucks, happens frequently on saturn. same kit fits all S series. if you can pull the console, you can put this in.
if you are in a hurry parts stores may have them in stock too.

What is the part number to the bushing on the shifter thta hooks on to the manual transmission cable and where can I buy it

Take a look on ebay for a saturn shifter repair kit. this was a common problem on S series manuals
from 91-99. There were significant changes in S series after 99 but the shifter cables may be the same. the kit is less than 20 bucks and is less difficult than taking the console out.

I have a 98 chevy cavalier 2.2L and need to replace shifter cable how difficult is it?

Kind of a pain in the neck - especially if you are not real inclined..

You have to take apart portions of the console to get at the cable where it connects to the shifter.. And disconnect the old cable at the shifter and at the trani linkage under-neath..

Not a real fun job..

Have a great day !

Automatic Shifting Lever difficulties

Don't do it yourself. You would have to have the car on a hoist to do the work, as so much of what has to be done is out of sight and out of reach even if you were to jack up the car on stands. I had the shifter cable changed on my 1998 Intrepid ES, which had never seen snow or ice (I'm from Ontario), as all winters were spent in Florida. Besides changing the cable, the interlock has to be adjusted, and without the proper instruction, you would have nothing but problems, and probably would not be able to turn your key in the ignition switch. The total cost (at the dealer) for parts and labour cost me $286.16 U.S. tx. incl. The only good manual to explain even part of the procedure is the Chrysler shop manual ($96.00 ). Get the cable changed before it seizes up altogether, or you break the shifter lever etc. trying to force it. Hope this helps you. Regards Al Waters
