Question about 2004 Jaguar X-Type

New calipers, rotars and pads just installed on 2004 x type jaguar. pedal was spongy so front and rear brakes bled. now pedal is better, but does not seem to have a solid stopping point still.

    Both front and back brakes were bled the old school way of the two man process. One to pump/hold down on the pedal and the other to release the bleeder valve and retighten. We made ABSOLUTELY sure the master cylinder NEVER emptied of brake fluid. Refilled after each wheel was bled. Now being told that it could be the ABS system itself that may need to be bled. Evidentially this requires a special machine to pulse the ABS system to purge any air. Would you concur?

    NNot sure I have ever bled brakes FROM the master cylinder before. Can you provide some guidance? Also, when you say "just do not put any power on". What exactly am I NOT applying power to? Thank you in advance for all your help.

    ok first do not put the key in the ignition. need an other person, on the abs unit there will 2 lines coming from the master cylinder and 3 or 4 going out. on the lines going out have some one pump the brakes and loosen 1 line at a time. do each line once.. then do all the brake calipers again back and front. do each caliper once..

    Hello Ted: I did some serious thinking about doing this brake work and realized these are the BRAKES I would be fooling with and on my wife's car to boot. I decided I could not risk her life on a screw up I might make so I will be bringing the car into the professionals today. I will rest easier knowing her brakes will be done correctly by the pros and not by a back yard mechanic like ME. I still wanted to thank you for all your assistance and insight. Ray

    that is a very good choice. I get a lot of cars in my garage that guys start a repair and do not know how things change in fixing cars,and the safety of ones wife and lids means alot

It has abs and how did you bleed it. abs has to bled with the pressure in the system with no power on

    you can bleed the abs just do it as the maser cylinder just do not put any power on.

Well,

I fill you in what I learned today. I have a 2005 S-Type Jaguar and the dealer sayed it needed new pads in the rear. They wanted $300 just for the pads and another $150 or so to install. That $450 bucks to replace the brake pads only on the rear of the car. And of course, the extended warranty doesn't cover this, so I said no thanks. I found the best brake pads from Napa for $52. I purchased them through my brothers shop- saved a little. I done lots of brake pad replacements over the years, but not on a new car like the Jaguar. Well they are a little different and the frist one took me awhile . Here is the trick. 1) MAke sure the parking brake is off and you do this by starting the car, stepping on the normal brake and then pushing the parking break lever down while shutting off the car. 2) You then take the tire off, use jack stands to ensure safety.3) Take off brake callipers, 2 bolts and the brake pads should just fall off.4) take the anti-rattle plate off the old pads by prying it off carefully with a tiny screw driver- clean and then install on the new ones. 5) Here I release the the valve for the brake fluid. I did not want to damage the system if the fluid went back into the system when I retracted the calliper. You use some fluid, but you can add when finished. 6)You either need one of those brake calliper tools that you push the calliper in with and If you don't have the trick new one with the keys to turn the brake calliper cylinder, you can get by with the old version like I did and use a pair of channel locks to turn counter clockwise, while continuing to turn the tool. The cylinder needss pressure on it while you turn. This will put in in the proper place. 7) Ensure you have the slots up and down so that the pin in the pad fits up into the cylinder. you know this is correct when you have it perfect vertical and center within the calliper. Pay attention when taking off! 8) Set the brake pads in their proper place and then slide the calliper over them. IT should go over freely or else you need to turn more on the cylinder. 9) Tighten the bolts and replace the tire and you are done. Next side!

Hi Jasa

Unless you are mechanically competent, I would not advise you carry out this procedure yourself, but leave it to the professionals.

If you are mechanically minded, and competent, the pads are relatively easy to replace, as follows.

Jack up the vehicle and put on stands, if you don´t have access to a hoist?

Remove wheels, and open the hood, put some kitchen roll around the brake fluid reservoir, to catch any excess brake fluid, when you push back the brake caliper pistons, if it´s been overfilled.
On the front brake caliper's, you are best to put in a little lever between pads and disc, and ease back the piston to fully retracted, unless you have a small G clamp which will do the same job when caliper is adrift.

Remove the 2 x 13mm caliper securing bolts and swing off the caliper, and support with a piece of wire, don´t just let it dangle on the brake hose.
Remove the brake pads, and sensor wire, check the caliper piston dust cover for splits, and clean caliper, housing, etc, and disc, with brake cleaner.

Fit the new brake pads to the caliper, and refit with 2 new securing bolts with blue lock tite, (normally supplied with the B/Pads.)

The rear caliper´s are pretty much the same as the front, although you can just undo the top bolt and swing the caliper back, but I usually remove both, for ease of cleaning, and inspection.

After rear caliper´s and pads and sensor wire, and new bolts are fitted, pump the brake pedal with the ignition on, and just run around, and check there are no leaks from the caliper pistons.
Check the fluid level, and lower with suction syringe if necessary.

By the way, 1. When did you last change your brake fluid ?
2. Adjust your front wheel bearings end float ?

You could do this now before you fit the wheels.?

SOURCE: Brake pads worn, making audible noise.

No special equip. needed. Replace pads with correct type.The discs on a 2004 should still be okay and not need replacement. Be carefull of wires to ABS sensor. Make sure that the fluid level is low enough in the resevoir to allow for the increase in level caused when the new pads are fitted.

I always use a c-clamp to push the piston in with. you won't be able to replace the pads unless you push the piston in.

I have a 23 t bucket and i cant get a brake pedal.when i bought it had very little brake so i replaced rear shoes and cylinders,front pads and calipers,all new lines and the master cylinder


Once you have bled the air from the brake lines,clamp off the front brake hoses carefully.Does the pedal feel better now?
Then the pad /caliper fit is allowing too much play.Is the pedal the same?Then clamp the rear hose and try the pedal.Is it fine with the rear hose clamped?If so we now know the problem is at the rear brakes.One common low pedal rear brake cause is brake shoes that do not fit the drums.Remove the drums and look at the shoes,are they showing contact wear fully or just in the middle of the shoe?Remove a shoe and place it in the drum.Can you rock the shoe against the drum surface?Once drums have been resurfaced,the shoes will not fit fully against the drum allowing the shoe the flex when applying pressure to it and this can easily create a low soft brake pedal. Of course rear brake adjustment must be correct once brake shoe contact is correct.To correct brake shoe contact,have your shoes re arc-ed to fit resurfaced drums or install new drums.Don't overlook brake master cyl /brake pedal push rod adjustment too.

Have you driven it since the brakes where replaced?

Did you bleed all four wheels?

have you "broken in" the new pads?

Are the rears drum or disk? If drum are they adjusted correctly?

are you using remanufactured master cylinders? If so keep replacing them. eventually you will get one that works. New is pricey but a better way to go.

Spongy brakes after changin brake pads and calipers


Sounds like the calipers weren't bled or weren't bled sufficiently. You should have a helper pump up the brakes. Then you should open one of the bleeder screws. The brake pedal should fall to the floor and air and/or fluid sould come out.. Close the bleeder before your helper lets the brake pedal up. If any air comes out repeat the process until only fluid comes out. Now repeat the process on the other caliper. Be sure to check the fluid level in the reservoir often to make sure it doesn't go empty.

If the car has Drum style rear brakes, make sure the adjustment is good. It takes a lot of fluid to activate them.
PS. I assume you did bleed the rears.

I would bleed the rears too especially if the brake fluid reservoir drained empty. Also you may need to drive the vehicle to seat the brake pads. Check and see how the pedal feels initially before you road test to make sure you don't need to pump the brakes in order to stop. if you do then re bleed all four wheels.If you don't have to pump the pedal and it just feels spongy then try going around the block a few times and see if the pedal stiffens up after the pads have seated.

loosen of the hand-brake adjustment and press the brake pedal a few times to self adjust the rear brakes.
Re-tighten the handbrake adj last.
Front brake sounds like a seized caliper,If possible remove caliper and clean and lubricate the piston.
This may work but replacement caliper may be the only other solution.Make sure the caliper slides are also clean and lubricated and the brake pads are in good order.(TRY THIS FIRST)
Also new brake shoes can make the pedal feel spongy for a couple of hundred miles until they have been run in.

Spongy brake pedal even after ABS bleed and base brake bleed.


Did you adjust the rear shoes out? If the rear drum brakes are out of adjustment they will give you a lot of pedal travel. If the pads are worn have no fear of that U-CLIP brake spring, just change one shoe at a time. Take the spring off one side, change the shoe, put the spring back on the post and do the same to the other shoe, no problem.

Spongy brake pedal


I have a 2001 Chevy 1500 4 X 4 that recently had all new pads, rotors, and calipers installed. Since then my brake pedal goes almost to the floor before I get any brakes. I took it back to the shop and they bled the brakes with no better results. I bled them also with no results. I took the truck back and they installed a master cylinder with no results. It's now at the Chevy dealer and they say it's normal - BS! I had good brakes before I had all of the brake parts replaced, no one can figure it out. If you have a load in the truck or if you tow anything you better be looking at the ditch to avoid an accident. The original brakes would put you nose into the windshield and now I could stop it better the Fred Flinstone way. Anyone have an answer????????

Brakes are still spongy after changing the pads, one caliper, and master cylinder. bled front brakes.


I just went to Brake Masters this morning and had them replace the Master Cylinder since I was experiencing the pedal very spongy and going to the floor. When they replaced the Master Cylinder and they gave me back the car, the brakes were still spongy and going to the floor. I addressed this to them and they took another look at it, but when I took it for a second time, the brakes were extremely spongy. It was almost like they gave me back my car in worst condition to when I brought it in. Can you help?

have you check? the master cylinder. sometine when you get the rotors cut they dont come out right because they may be warped or to thin. if you did the job yourself you might have put the calipers in on the wrong side. this happens alot . if your rotors front and rear are fine then switch the calipers to the other side.
