Could be a hose or the gasket on top cover or the unit it's self could have an internal leak. Clean the hoses and continually check for fluid on a daily basis. Also look for cracks and signs of soft spots on the hoses especially near the connections, this should help you narrow down where the fluid is going.

Just additional information on 85 Nissan 300ZX. The belt is breaking almost as soon as it is installed..

My first suspicion when I read this is that your air conditioner pump has seized..... This very quickly burns the belt in two... Either that or your alternator or water pump or power steering pump... You have to find out what doesn't want to turn..

There could be a problem with the fluid. Either you need to add or you need to have it replaced. As you lift you foot off the gas, more effort is needed by the power steering motor to turn the engine there may not be enough hydraulic pressure to turn the wheels.

96 300zx. What would cause a steering dead zone?

Could be the steering rack is worn out. But there is some adjustment I believe.

But before you try to adjust the rack, make sure the tierod ends are not loose, there is no play in and out on the steering shaft, and there is plenty of power steering fluid.

Hi. i have a nissan pintara 1990 automatic. i have put it up for sale and was asked a question if it had power steering. i am not sure as i never drove it. when i look at the engine there could be a thing...

I would almost bet that is does have P/S. To find out, start the engine and while sitting still if you can easily turn the steering wheel from side to side it has power steering. Also you could raise the hood and look and see if you see a power steering pump.

1985 Nissan 300zx power steering hard

I'd love to help, but none of my service manuals show your car having variable assist power steering. Even '86 and '87 don't have it. The electrical connection you see at the pump, is a power steering pressure switch. All it does is tell the ecm that the engine is under load at idle when you crank the wheel hard and it bumps the idle up a bit so you don't stall the engine, but that's all it does. If you like, I can send you two wiring diagrams depicting the all underhood electronics, but I think you probably have a bad rack and pinion. Seems like a common problem from the small amount of checking I did.

Power steering

Did you burp the system by removing the cap and turning the wheel from lock to lock, back and forth? You could use a turkey baster to pull some of the fluid out of the reservoir to make it easier, then top it back off. I hate to say it, but if none of this works, you may be looking at a new steering rack.

It could be the rack bushings - take a look and see if they're worn (it shouldn't be hard to see them with the car up in the air). If they are, they won't anchor the rack as they should, so some of the notchiness could be play in the bushings as the rack itself shifts while you turn the wheel.
