Question about 1998 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Problem is I NEED HELP!!! I have an 85 merc. cougar that started losing power and stalling out of no where. At first I thought there might be a fuel problem, i.e. pump, filter etc.I had afterall been running on next to fumes for some time from a low budget. But then it stalled with plenty petro and I could hear pump engage and fuel was def reaching the engine. My daughter had recently crashed the coug into a truck and it did some pretty good damage to the right front quarter panel, from the head light to the passenger door. I checkt for broken wires and possible electrocal shorts. Okay, form there I started at the battery to follow electrical route Thats when I discovered my coil wire (plug wire) that was xtra long had goteen caught up in my altenater fan causing exstenive damage to the wire. Had one layin around the haouse so I installed it and gave her a shot.Hoor-ray I did it I thot.(By the way, I am a 49yr old female that has self taught herself about automotive repair.) No choice of my own.Well that worked long enough to drive about two blocks from where the original breakdown was and again power loss. Again it made me think fuel??? Well I tried yet another coil wire (used) it seems to be working at least up to the distributer. Did I fry my distributer switch module?? My coil, ignition cylanoid?? I cant afford hired help and now my car is in danger of being towed from the neighbor-hood I pushed it to so to avoid it being towed from a major street with no parking. Can someone please help? Does anyone have a visual sample I can view to guide me along the electrical trouble-shooting direction.I need more knowledge that doesnt cost me $$$ cuz I dont have $$$.tHIS Blonde bombshells brain is boggled

Well i am just a shade tree michanic that relies on common sense and some experance. now is there spark at the coil? you will need to pull coil wire off distributor and lay it close enought to where you unpluged it to see if there is spark from coil to distributer, it should be a bluish spark, if its yellowish that means its weak and might be the problem, you will have to turn engine over to do this. don't hold on to coil wire when you do this, if there is spark it will knock you on your ****. coils do this, work when cold, get hot loose power. also ford motor co. uses a lot of fuseable links most are located around the battery. witch is on the side that was hit, consentrate around there. you can chk. fuseable links, they will have wire in wire out with a round part in middle thats the fuse, grab each wire and pull if its burnt it will pull apart. now if by chance it would start and run for a while and then quit that would be the time to chk. spark. now it could still be ignition module but i believe you need to see if you got fire from coil first. now if your sure you got fire from coil, here is a easy way to chk. module, find and old spark plug, any plug you know is good, pull a plug wire off engine prefer #1 but don't matter and plug in that old plug and ground to anything metal and turn over engine, got spark? good module, no spark bad module. its best to do this after it has run, because modules are like coils may work cold and hot will not. now if you can't do all this, your only recourse is to take coil and distributer module off and take have tested at a auto parts store like autozone. i tried to cover as much as i can, if you need more answers, i'll be glade to help as much as i can. GOOD LUCK.

Why does my 98 grand marquis loses power when in drive not in park or neutral.?

my first thought is the intake is dirty. a can of seafoam in your gas tank will clean that. also check the ground wire on the fuel injector rail.you can find it on the back of the engine close to the fire wall. take it loose and clean it and reinstall. last thought is the throttle po,sensor.

It sounds like a fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure. What size engine?

Sounds like a vacuume leak, use some carb cleaner in a spray can and gently spray the engine. When you find the leak the engine will stumble, check in that area for the leak.

1997 3.8 cougar stalling . no power soon after start up

Try looking for engine vacuum leak, around the injector seals inlet etc.Is the air box lid and hoses tight and leak free?Could also be fuel pressure problem Try squeezing the fiel return line with the appropriate tool so you dont damage it and see wether the engine idles properly. If idles better more than likely fuel pressure problem.
