A blocked PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve can cause this - they get blocked with carbon and soot, then crank case pressure builds up, OR the oil control rings are worn, allowing combustion chamber compression "blow-by".
Have the cylinders tested for compression and leak-down, if this test passes then pull the PCV valve and fit a new one, it is plastic, black, has 2 or 3 hoses going to it and it sits between the crank case and the inlet manifold. Cheap to replace, unlike oil control rings which require a motor rebuild.
