Replace drain plug on radiator - 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

if not leaking,leave it alone,to drain,just disconnect bottom hose to drain,I never use drain plug,too slow.If it's a stock drain plug,then you will need to call dealer and ask for parts.

BUY YOUR RADIATOR HOSES FIRST MAKE SURE NEW HOSES MATCH THE OLD HOSES. BUY NEW RADIATOR CLAMPS AND HAVE EXTRA GALLON OF ANTIFREEZE. MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COOL IF YOU GOING TO CHANGE TOP RADIATOR HOSE REMOVE RADIATOR CAP OR OVER FLOW JUG CAP IF YOUR RADIATOR DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP FIND RADIATOR DRAIN PLUG.PLACE A CATCH PAN.OPEN RADIATOR DRAIN PLUG CATCH ANTIFREEZE. DRAIN HALF ANTIFEEZE IF YOU GOING TO REPLACE TOP HOSE AND DRAIN OUT ALL ANTIFREEZE IF YOU GOING TO CHANGE LOWER COOLANT HOSE TO WATER PUMP.WHEN DONE CLOSE DRAIN PLUG.PUT ANTIFREEZE IN A SAFE PLACE FROM PETS AND KIDS UNTIL JOB DONE. WHEN YOU REMOVE COOLANT REMOVE WATER HOSE CLAMPS THEN REMOVE RADIATOR HOSES PUT NEW RADIATOR HOSES AND CLAMPS ON HOSES TIGHTEN HOSE CLAMPS DONT OVER TIGHTEN. POUR ANTIFREEZE IN RADIATOR.CRANK ENGINE UP CHECK FOR LEAKS.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL WHEN THERMOSTAT OPENS ADD MORE COOLANT AS NEEDED.

There is a drain on the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side of the radiator to drain the anti-freeze. Remove the radiator cap and loosen the drain plug on the radiator, spray some WD-40 on the drain valve to help get it loose. Drain the radiator, tighten back up the drain plug and refill, should be 1-11/2 gallons.

There is drain plug on the drivers side of the radiator at the bottom, but the safest way is to just remove the lower radiator hose on the passenger side to drain the radiator. The drain plug is plastic and it may crack due to time and heat and you'll have to buy a replacement radiator drain plug, for this reason most newer radiator don't come with a drain plug and if you want one you'll have to install the drain plug kit. If your radiator doesn't have a drain plug then you have the newer radiators install already as the older radiators we still being installed until they were all gone and the new ones were installed.

The Drain Plug aka Radiator Drain **** has an o-ring on it that does wear-out over time, causing a leak. You can remove and replace these relatively ease. They only turn 1/4th to 1/3rd Counterclockwise to Open and Clockwise to Close. Work on only when the engine is cool. Leave the cap on the radiator to create a suction, decreasing the amount of radiator fluid you will lose. OR drain the Radiator Fluid into a clean container and save for reuse.
Have the new Radiator Drain **** ready for immediately insertion after removing the other leaking Radiator Drain ****. To Remove:
Twist the Radiator Drain **** counterclockwise and pull, continuing to twist counterclockwise removing it.
Immediately install the new Radiator Drain **** by first pushing in and then twisting clockwise to close.

There common to break off, you can pick up the replacement drain plug at NAPA and buy a stud retracter to remove the drain plug. if the plug is not leaking, Leave it alone and to drain the radiator, just disconnect the lower radiator hose on the opposite side of the radiator.

There is a drain plug on the radiator on the divers side, inside at the bottom. Note: most of the time when the plug is removed the O-ring get's damaged and needs to be replaced since it sticks to the radiator. Most of the time it's quicker and easier to disconnect the lower radiator hose on the passenger side and let it drain there. Most of the newer radiator don't even have a drain plug and if you want a drain plug,you'll have to drill a hole where the drain plug should be and place one there. The drain plug is around $4.99 at most Auto Parts store. Good luck and hope this helps.

the drain plug will have seals on it, just replace the drain plug. any parts store will have a drain plug/seal

You can remove the drain plug in the bottom on the radiator.
You can remove the lower radiator hose. Since the vehicle is 10 years old you may want to inspect the hoses for replacement anyway.

) Make sure the vehicle is cool.
) Slightly loosen the radiator cap to release any pressure.
) Re-tighten the radiator cap.
) Place a suitable container under the drain point.
) open the drain.
) Re-loosen the radiator cap again.
) Allow to drain.
) REPLACE THE DRAIN PLUG.
* At this point the radiator can be fill with water and a radiator cleaning agent- run the engine - allow to warm up.
* Re-drain the radiator - .
) REPLACE THE DRAIN PLUG.
) Refill the radiator with water/anti-freeze.
) Dispose of waste fluid according to the local regulations. Some city dumps will accept it. Some parts stores may accept it. Do not pour down the drain or dump on the ground.
