How do you replace the gas filter on a 1999 chevy venture 3.4 van?

How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a Chevy
I want to do this! What's This?

A clean fuel filter in your Chevy means clean fuel injectors and a clean fuel pressure regulator. Replace the fuel filter in your every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to keep the fuel system in optimal condition. Follow the instructions provided here to change the fuel filter on a Chevy that does not have a flex fuel system.
Difficulty: Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • Shop towel
  • Pressure gauge
  • Container for fuel
  • Car ramps
  • Wrench
  • New fuel filter
  1. 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable. Relieve the vapor pressure in the fuel tank by slowly loosening the fuel filter cap. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure valve as you connect a pressure gauge to the fuel pressure valve.
  2. 2 Put the bleed hose of the gauge into a container that will hold the fuel. Open the gauge valve to bleed the system pressure. Drain any fuel that remains in the gauge into the container, as well.
  3. 3 Raise the vehicle and clean the fuel filter connections and the surrounding areas. Disconnect the fuel pipes and the threaded fittings from the fuel filter. Cover the fuel pipes once they're disconnected, to prevent contaminating your fuel system.
  4. 4 Slide the fuel filter out of the bracket on the frame rail. Check the fuel pipe O-rings and replace the if you find any cuts, nicks, or distortion. Slide the new filter into the bracket. Remove the caps you put on the fuel pipes and connect the threaded fittings back to the filter. Tighten the fittings to 18 foot-pounds.
  5. 5 Lower the vehicle and tighten the fuel filter cap. Replace the fuel. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition on for 2 seconds. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds, the Chevy and check for leaks.
Tips & Warnings
  • Always let the pressure out of the fuel system before you disconnect the fuel lines. Do this carefully so as not to spray fuel on your skin, face or eyes.
  • Make sure you wipe up any fuel that may have spilled while you were replacing the filter.

I need "step by step" instructions on how to replace the fuel filter on my 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup. Thanks !

Here you go if it is a diesel:
A. FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT:
The fuel filter is located inside of the fuel filter housing
1. Unscrew and remove fuel filter cap at top of fuel filter housing. To unscrew, attach tool to 6-sided hex center of cap. Do not loosen cap at outer edge. The fuel filter cap is designed to remove filter while pulling up on cap.
2. Remove O-ring from cap and discard.
3. The filter is retained to cap with little fingers. Carefully pry a couple of them off from old filter.
B. FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT:
1. Thoroughly clean inside of filter housing, cap, etc. with clean diesel fuel
2. Fill filter housing (canister) with clean diesel fuel. NOTE: If you do not do this, you will have to manually bleed air out of system later. No fun.
3. Snap new fuel filter to bottom of cap.
4. Install new O-ring
5. Apply lihgt film of clean diesel oil to cap O-ring
6. Load filter/cap into housing.
7. Tighten cap to 25 ft. lbs. torque. Do NOT over-tighten.

Replace fuel filter

The fuel filter is located near the rear of the vehicle, forward or rearward of the fuel tank, depending upon application. There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. The filter only is replaced if it becomes restricted.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Relieve the fuel system pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail. For details regarding this procedure, please refer to Fuel System of this information.
  1. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Clean both fuel feed pipe connections and the surrounding areas at the in-line fuel filter with a clean rag to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system.
  4. Using a backup wrench, remove the fuel line fittings from the fuel filter. Most of the models fuel gilter wrench sizes will be 16mm and 20mm.
  5. Either disconnect the quick-connect fittings by pushing inward toward the filter and grasping the plastic tab around the connector and pull them apart. Or remove the fuel filter mounting screws, then remove the filter from the vehicle.
  6. Discard the fuel line O-rings and replace with new ones during installation.
To install:

Install new O-rings to the fuel line fittings.
Connect the fuel lines to the fuel filter.
Position the filter in the same position it was during removal. Using a backup wrench, tighten the fuel lines to 20-22 ft. lbs. (27-30 Nm).

Fuel Filter

the fuel filter should be on the back frame railing and can not be cleaned, but must be replaced. Remove the clamps that hold the fuel filter to the fuel line and put the new one in place. It is a simple matter to change and costs around 7 dollars.
