Removal & Installation

1.6L Engine
A/C Compressor Belt

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

To install:
  1. Properly route and install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor, the power steering (if equipped), and the crankshaft pulleys.
  2. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
  3. Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 13-20 f t. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator Belt

Vehicle Speed Sensor fault

There are three parts of the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit; the VSS, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the wiring between the two. The problem could be in any one, or more, of these parts.
The most likely problem would be with the VSS itself. You can check the VSS signal with a DVOM set to read AC volts. Raise the front wheels off the ground and support the vehicle with jack stands. Never, ever work on a vehicle that is supported by a jack alone. Having a vehicle fall on your chest could ruin your whole day.
Connect the leads of the DVOM to the yellow, C1-64 and purple, C1-65 wires of connector C1 (blue) of the PCM. Be very, very careful you do not damage the connections of the wires. I use a single strand of a multi-strand wire to insert into the connector then connect my leads to that. There is an electrical test kit you can buy but the single strand wire will do quite nicely in a pinch.
Put the key in the ON engine OFF position, place the transmission in DRIVE or NUETRAL and slowly rotate the right front wheel. You should get a reading of 0.4 volts AC. If the reading is good set your DVOM to ohms and measure the resistance of the whole circuit. It should read between 1650 to 3180 ohms. If not you have a problem in the wiring. If both check out good, then the problem is in the PCM.
The PCM will run about $321.45 and about an hour labor to replace and reprogram. The VSS will run about $35.17 and about a half hour to replace. Figure about one hour labor to diagnose the problem. If the problem is in the wiring; that is charged by the actual time it takes to locate and repair the problem.
The VSS is located on the end of the transmission. Remove the right front tire and you will see it. To replace it simply unplug the connector, remove the attaching bolt and remove the VSS from the transmission. Then install the new one, secure the attaching bolt and plug in the connector. Simple as that.

then it's not the idler pulley, it's more than likely the belt, or water pump, or anything in there that turns,....take a long screw driver and touch all the parts with the other end touching your ear, BE CAREFUL OF MOVING PARTS, when you touch what is making the noise it'll be amplified in you ear,....

Need to replace a/c belt. cannot stretch belt over idler pully. Is special tool needed?

If you have a 3.0 engine, the idler pulley is moved to allow the belt to be replaced. There is a bolt to hold it in place and a second bolt to adjust tension.

How do replace the tensioner pulley on a 2.2 engine 4 cyl. 1998 chevy cavelier .

there are two bolts located behind the pully on the mounting bracket arm, (you have to use a 1/2 inch drive bar in the idler pully to move it so you can see the bolts) That will help you with locating the bolts, while you are moving the pully you might as well take the belt off to save time, After you remove the old idler pully install the new one, use your 1/2 drive bar on the pully to put your belt back on. Pretty simple job, good luck!

How to change an alternator belt on a 1998 montero

Please confirm to me but I believe the alternator is driven with the serpintine belt. If this is the case there is an idler/tension pulley that would need to be first loosened (I believe it is a 14MM) then at the top of the bracket where this pulley is mounted there is a bolt that you rotate to either loosen or tighten the belt (by turning this bolt you either raise or lower the pulley.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

How do you relace an alternator belt on 1998 chevy tracker?

A year is not a good sign. The belt should not have come off in that span of time. I would make sure you do not have a worn out idler or tensioner pulley bearing before installing your new belt or reinstalling the original if it is not worn or damaged.

You will find one or two small pulleys involved with drive belt. One of the smaller pulleys will be an "idler" pulley and simply redirects the belt to a different accessory. The other small pulley is considered a "tensioner" pulley, it is spring loaded and keeps the correct tension on the accessory belt.
The tensioner pulley will have a "squared" hole in the bracket or a bolt through the center of the pulley. In either case you will use a wrench to pry the tensioner pulley arm in the direction that loosens the belt. Once tension is relieved, pull the belt off a pulley and remove the belt. You will reverse the process to install the new belt.
Good luck and let me know.
Regards,

1998 Saturn SL idler pulley broke off and bolt is stuck in engine

The idler pully can be removed without removing the engine. I have replaced mine in my 97 SL2. As to the bolt breaking off, that is strange. I assume that if the bolt broke off, then the idler pully also fell off. If I remember, the space is somewhat limited, so getting a removal tool in there could be very difficult, especially if the bolt is flush with the mounting hole. That doesn't sound like a fun project. If bolt protrudes, maybe you can get some vise-grips on it and turn it out.
