04 trailblazer front wheels grind after using 4wd?

Front wheels grind after using 4wd, front left wheel wants to lock up when 4wd is engaged. When switched back to 2wd frnt wheel seems to have some resistance on it and there is grinding noise, I can;t tell if it is from both wheels or just one.

You probably have a front drive splined disconnect assembly that has gone bad. This assembly engages the front differential when 4WD is selected. Below is a figure of the item, it is on the passenger side of the differential area.

Thank you very much Freddy! I just went out and lifted the front end up took both tires off, right wheel spins without much resistance and no noise. But the driver side has alot of resistance and anoise coming fromthe point where the inner cv jointattaches to the differential. Would this be from what you suggested or is it the cv jointor something else? Thank You

  • Josh Jan 02, 2013

I was thinking it might be the CV joint/axle, or is there a bearing to go bad in at the point where the axle and differential meet?

  • Freddy Jan 03, 2013

Yes, there is an inner bearing as well as the differential gears. Sounds like a disassembly will be needed.

SOURCE: noise when in 4 x 4

Bad news... It sounds like you have a broken/stripped axle. I would start at the wheel and start disassembling from the outside in. It may just be a stripped spline in the spindle.

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.
good luck

3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

How do ii disengage 4 locked 4wd..

Hi Rick:
Depending on the vehicle, there may be externally locking (warn) hubs on the front wheels. These have to be manually dis-engaged at the wheel hubs by rotating a fitting at the center of the hub. Otherwise, there should be a shift lever or switch inside the vehicle that will dis-engage the 4WD

Front differential?

Sounds like the transfer case is not engaging into 4wd. It has a solenoid or actuator, but it could be damaged inside too.

Check the 4x4 wiring ground (directly behind the left front tire, mounted to the body). If the front axle actuator is still good, this is usually the source of frustration. Put some RTV Gasket sealer on the nut and bolt after you replace them to help keep it from corroding as fast.

4wd front hub wont disengage

Possible the vacuum bleed-off to the switch you installed isn't allowing it to completely disengage. Pull the bleed-off line from the new switch and see if it works. could be just a tight spot/bent closed in the bleed-off line or the vent plugged.

Got. A 2003 f150 4x4 got problems with 4 wheel drive locking in and stay in drive shaft turning front wheels not

Operationally vacuum shifts the front axle between 2WD and 4WD mode. The GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) applies ground to the solenoid needed for the mode selected on the switch ( for ESOF ) or when the transfer case shift lever is moved ( MSOF ).The contact plates in the transfer case signal the GEM that the transfer case is engaged, and the Vacuum solenoids need to be activated ( either 2WD to 4WD or 4WD to 2WD ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem ( this is what you seem to have, the transfer case is engaged and will drive the front shaft mine was a key on engine off test ).

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
•With the truck running ( with front wheel back on the ground ), switch from 2WD to 4WD and back again, the vacuum shift motor should move the lever on the front axle.
sscullys_185.jpg
-- If the vacuum shift motor does not move:
1.Check for vacuum on the lines while shifting between modes. Pink vacuum line is 2WD mode, Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD.
2.Check the fuses for the 4WD system and the solenoids.
3.Check the vacuum lines from the vacuum shift motor to the solenoids on the firewall.
sscullys_187.jpg
4.Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids to the vacuum reservoir box behind the battery.
5.Check the vacuum reservoir box for cracks.
6.Typical solution is the vacuum lines ( to the solenoids or to the vacuum shift motor ) are cracked or the vacuum shift motor has a cracked diaphragm and has water in it.
7.Could be the shift plate contacts in the transfer case are corroded / not making good contact, and not activating the solenoids.
sscullys_186.jpg

Usually the case is cracked vacuum lines from the solenoids, the next common is a cracked vacuum reservoir box, and 1 time I have seen the mount for the vacuum disconnect motor broken ( motor floating free so it could not push against the axle )

2005 Trailblazer XT won\'t go into 4WD. Front hubs don\'t engage with switch in cab. It will gear down to 4wd Lo but front wheels won\'t engage. Please help. Can\'t afford the dealer!

i've been told it was the 4wd actuator located on the passenger side near were the cv joint goes in to the front axle a good test is to floor jack it up so both wheels are off the ground and have someone on the other side , put in nutrual turn both wheels one way at same time and the 4wd drive shaft should turn if not its your actuator, costs about $86 for anew actuator and takes about 5 mins to change once you have the tire off
