Question about 1993 Subaru Legacy

Open Question

Last night my 93 Legacy was idling in park. When I depressed the break shift out of park my engine dang near died & my lights, inside & out, dimmed dramatically. Foot off brake, idle returned

For the last year I have been saying, to at least 2 ASE techs that there is something going on with my electrical somewhere. The tests were ran & both mechanics at separate times told me that those quick flickers of my lights, that were so fast I didnt believe I really saw them, (as it seems only I can see those suckers) is nothing to worry about. The other mech. said it was a trick of the lights & not really a nano second of dimming. Well here I am & there the car sits. What is wrong? (other than the car seeking revenge for the mountain drives I have taken it on)

check the IACV (idle air conrol valve) which monitors idle speed. a clean out of one is a good idea periodically either way.

SOURCE: 1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Engine dies at low idle.

I understand you have maintained it properly, But often people seem to forget things like the Fuel filter. Another cause is vacuum leaks. If the car has a miss you might try a can of Seafoam through the fuel system. Cleans the system very nicely and improves fuel mileage. Hope this helps to return the Subbie to its dependable abilities. Good luck.

Alternator?
Voltage Regulator?

If the noise sounds like a weeeeeee that increases in pitch as the RPMs increase, and you haven't heard this sound before the 'problem', suspect the alternator...

99 honda accord won't shift out of park

Check your brake light function. If that is at fault then your brake light switch may be faulty. If your brake lights are fine then you may have a faulty shift lock solenoid. Some Japanese models of that era have a button or key slot near to the shift lever. If you depress that then it should manually release the lock and allow you to move through the gears, until you move back to 'P' position at which point it will lock again.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback. The shift lock solenoid went bad and I ciuldnt get out if park, but it seemed to be related to the tail lights going out first. We had it replaced and then it broke...

The shift lock is powered through the brake switch, which is located on the brake pedal under the dash near the firewall. In order to shift out of Park, the brake pedal must be depressed, closing the circuit to the shift solenoid AND the brake lights through the brake relay. I'd suggest replacing the brake switch.

94 subaru legacy wagon stalls when engine is warm then starts when cool

Have the battery and alt tested for free at the local parts store.
Tell them what it's doing, and start suspecting a fuel issue.
Could be getting the right amount of fuel but not burning it. (plugs, wires, coil)
Or could not be getting enough fuel.

Still hard to say, so get the charging/power system checked first.
Let me know what you find out as I'm real curious now.

Same happened to a friend and it was the fuel pump....
Same for another friend and it was 2 bad coil packs.

Check engine light came on last night, transmission will not up or down shift automaticly will shift manually, engine revs to 2500 until brake is depressed

Have the codes read with a scanner and do the repairs accordingly. May be a speed sensor or shift solenoids or the ECU.

No break light, can not shift gear.

your brake light switch has failed. this will also allow you to shift out of park when you hit the brake pedal. when you hit the brake pedal the brake light should come on and the shift interlock solenoid will activate(you might hear a clicking sound under the dash or near the shift handle) allowing you to shift out of park.

1999 Toyata Corolla will not start unless accelerator is depressed. Only continues to run in neutral/park if accelerator is depressed. If shifted to drive engine dies. What are the possible explanations?

check and clean/replace (idle air control) IAC valve. Its probably sticking or motor may be dead, replacing the unit is recommended. This unit controls your engine idle. Hopefully this helps

Dies when shifted into gear

May be having problems with engine vacuum leaking. Pull the large hose going to the vacuum operated brake booster and block off the hose end with a cork or other plug. Start the engine and see if it runs more smoothly. Set the emergency brake and put in gear--does it idle smoothly? If so, then you likely have a bad vacuum leak within the booster unit. Restore the vacuum hose to the cylinder and arrange to replace the cylinder.

97 Toyota Corolla. A friend of mine cannot get his car into reverse, due to the break light fuse. A local m stated that most likley needed to replace the lights in the break light. Cannot for the life...

If brake pedal sensor is bad, then lever cannot be taken out of Park unless you depress the shift lock near base of shift lever - pop off small rectangular tab to access.

Burned out brake light bulbs will not affect the shifting.

1996 Subaru Legacy No Power At All

Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
