Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

The engine acts like it wants to turn over, but after a few seconds you can hear what sounds like a skate board wheel spinning. On some attempts, it just makes the spinning sound. Thanks

Check to see if the battery is FULLY CHARGED! If it isn't, theree will not be enough electric power to move the starter solenoid all the way into the flywheel gear. If you have a spare FULLY CHARGED battery use it to test or put a charger on the one you have and boost it! By the way, when did you replace the battery, or check it's water level last?

SOURCE: when turning steering wheel - either way, clunking sound.

Sounds like you have a bad CV joint, this will make a clunking or clicking noise like you described only when turning, and varies with vehicle speed.

Have it repaired before it breaks and leaves you stranded, or damages anything else.

Car was shut off. Minutes later, when attempting to start, the engine cranked freely. Won't start. Not sure where to start looking for problems.

Sounds like a timing chain problem, you could check compression but I think your going to have to take it to a shop regardless. Make sure that the engine is turning over and it's just not the starter spinning that your hearing.

Engine will not turn over no electrical then a few minutes later electrical comes back on

The very first thing you want to check is that the battery connections are clean and tight! If that does not solve your problem, check where the ground cable attaches to the engine. This does not sound like a starter problem, (that would be a long shot), so check other connections first. You might have the battery load tested... NOT just for voltage.

Engine won't turn over

More info is needed. Does the engine CRANK? In other words does the starter spin the engine over but not start? If it fails to crank, it is a starter or battery problem.

2002 Kia Rio, sometimes it starts up fine. More and more often it sounds like the starter motor is spinning, but its not engaging. So it's not even attempting to turn over the engine. It's not a clicking,...

very good post, few like it.
this is the starter free spinning
the solenoids job is the engage the teeth the fly wheel (ring gear)

the pinon shaft in starter is dirty, clean it (easy fix)
bad starter solenoid. get a new starter , most solenoids cost more.
your suspisons are dead on.

2002 ford explorer 4 wheel drive acting up

You have to put it in neutral with the engine running and the vehicle stopped and your foot on the brake. Press the button and wait a few seconds and you should hear it disengage. You have destoyed the deferential by driving it on a non slippery surface with the 4x4 engaged. Very very expensive mistake if you ever decide to fix it. Hopefully it will do ok in 2wd.

AC Clutch noise and vibration

An A/C clutch will not make this concern happen, more likely the A/C compressor is begining to go out. The belt on the A/C clutch Assy. free wheels (spins feree on the pulley) when clutch is not engaged. If concern is not present with A/C off this means the bearings in the puley assy. ok. Once the A/C clutch is engaged it locks the compressor against the spinning pulley and turn the compressor chaft and spins the A/C compressor internal shaft. If you hear a loud "screach" when you turn on the A/C it means the belt slipped for a second, if it continiues to screach it means either the belt is loose or that the compressor is internaly locking up. I wouild start by checking the belt tension (if not equipted with and auto tensioner). You can also remove the belt and turn on the A/C and attempt to turn the clutch/pulley by hand, it should turn with a little effect but should not bind or lock at times if that happens compressor is bad.

Battery is good but when I turn it on it just clicks won't start, maybe after 20 times it starts

Without hearing the sound it makes - it's kind of hard to diagnose.

The engine starting process consists of turning the key to start, the starter motor's rotor moving forward to engage the engine's flywheel, and then the starter motor 's "rotor" spinning until you move the key from "start" to "run". You can hear the starter motor spinning - but one usually can't hear the rotor moving forward to engage the flywheel. As a result, you hear the odd spinning sound - which is the starter rotor spinning. The engine never actually turns over because the rotor never engages the fly wheel. If this is the case, then it is very likely that your starter needs to be checked and / or replaced.

Good luck!
