Open Question

I have a 1993 Honda Vt1100 and accidentally disconnected one of the evaporative emission control system tubes while cleaning the bike. The disconnected tube is the single one that goes from the purge control valve to the carburettor (I think). My problem is that I cannot find where exactly on the carburettor it goes. The diagram of the system on the inside of the left hand side cover is not specific enough. I know it sounds thick but can anyone enlighten me as to where it goes?

    The disconnected tube is one of 3 tubes that emanate from the Purge Control Valve (PCV). It is a single tube which goes from one side of the PCV and goes back towards the carburettors on the left hand side of the bike and connects somewhere in the region of the rear cylinder carburettor. The official diagram of the system which is located on the inside of the LHS side cover shows this tube as item No.11 does not show EXACTLY where this tube connects to at the carburettor. This is the information I require. Without this specific piece of information the carburettors will have to be removed in order to find the connection location, which is a large task to take on. At present the location of the tube connection at the carburettor end is not obvious without undertaking a great deal of dismantling. The tube No.11 is a single tube with ONLY 2 connections one at the PCV & the other somewhere in the region of the rear cylinder carburettor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there:

To cause a P0443, there has to be a problem with the purge control CIRCUIT, not necessarily the valve. Usually they are a unit housing the valve and the solenoid as an assembly. Or it could be comprised of a separate solenoid with vacuum lines to a purge valve. That said, it could be any of the following:
- Bad purge solenoid (internal short or open)
- Wiring harness chafing or rubbing another component causing short or open on control circuit
- Connector worn, broken or shorted due to water intrusion
- Driver circuit inside powertrain control module (PCM) is bad



About the possible solutions
1. Using a scan tool, command the purge solenoid to activate. Listen or feel for a clicking coming from the purge solenoid. It should click once, or on some models it may click repeatedly.

2. If it doesn't click with scan tool activation, unplug the connector and examing the solenoid and connector for damage, water, etc. Then check for battery voltage on the feed wire with the key on. If you have battery voltage, then ground the control side manually using a jumper wire and see if the valve clicks. If it does, then you know the solenoid is working properly but there is a problem with the control circuit. If it doesn't click when you manually ground it, replace the purge solenoid.

3. To check for a problem on the control circuit (if the solenoid tests okay and you have voltage to the solenoid) plug the solenoid back in and remove the control circuit (ground) wire from the ECM connector (If you're unsure how to do this, do not attempt). With the ground wire removed from the ECM, turn the key on and then manually ground the Purge valve control wire. The solenoid should click. If it does, then you know there is no problem with the control wire to the solenoid and there is a problem with the ECM purge solenoid driver circuit in the ECM. You'll need a new ECM. However if it doesn't click, then there must be an open in the wiring between the ECM and and the solenoid. You must find it and repair it.

Could it be that the ecu is wrong


No it is not Catalytic Converter related. Your fuel tank pressure sensor must be disconnected or the wiring to it defective for the evaporative emission system.

  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

P1443 Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve The Evaporative Emission Control System monitors the fuel vapor flow between the engine intake manifold and the EVAP canister. The system failure occurs when a leak or blockage between the intake manifold, the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister is detected by the PCM.

Code P1443 Possible Causes:

What does po440 on a 2003 saturn vue mean with a service engine soon light on


That is a problem in the evaporative emission control system.
Could be anything causing it
Clogged filter in the charcoal canister
A leak in one of the vacuum lines
The purge valve not working,,,etc.
The best thing is to take it and have it checked out, they might have to do a smoke test to find the problem.
All they do is inject smoke into the system, if there is a leak the smoke will come out of it. All it takes is a pin hole in these emission systems to screw it all up.

I checked the codes and one comes up its po446. i dont under stand what it mean so i cant fix it to get the light to go out.

P0455 - EVAP Control System Leak Detected (No Purge Flow or Large Leak) The PCM monitors the complete EVAP control system for no purge flow, the presence of a large fuel vapor leak or multiple small fuel vapor leaks. The system failure occurs when no purge flow (attributed to fuel vapor blockages or restrictions), a large fuel vapor leak or multiple fuel vapor leaks are detected by the EVAP running loss monitor test with the engine running (but not at idle).
  • After-market EVAP hardware (such as fuel filler cap) non-conforming to required specifications
  • Disconnected or cracked fuel EVAP canister tube, EVAP canister purge outlet tube or EVAP return tube
  • EVAP canister purge valve stuck closed
  • Damaged EVAP canister
  • Damaged or missing fuel filler cap
  • Insufficient fuel filler cap installation
  • Loose fuel vapor hose/tube connections to EVAP system components
  • Blockages or restrictions in fuel vapor hoses/tubes (items also listed under disconnections or cracks)
  • Fuel vapor control valve tube assembly or fuel vapor vent valve assembly blocked
  • Canister vent (CV) solenoid stuck open

  • Check for missing fuel filler cap. If the cap is loose DO NOT DISTURB EVAP system.
  • Verify that both the input port vacuum hose and EVAP return tube are attached to the EVAP canister purge valve. Note: If the EVAP canister-CV solenoid assembly is not accessible during this pinpoint test step, GO to Evaporative Emissions, Section 303-13 in the Workshop Manual for removal and installation instructions.
  • Verify that the CV solenoid is properly seated on the EVAP canister (if possible).
  • Visually inspect for disconnected or cracked fuel vapor hoses/tubes between the intake manifold, the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister, the fuel vapor vent valve assembly and if applicable the fuel vapor control valve tube assembly.
  • Check for damage to the fuel filler pipe and the fuel tank.
Is a fault indicated? Yes No CONNECT or REPLACE fuel vapor hoses/tubes as required. REPLACE damaged EVAP system components (fuel filler pipe, fuel vapor vent valve assembly, fuel vapor control valve tube assembly, EVAP canister purge valve, FTP sensor and EVAP canister-CV solenoid assembly) as necessary. REFER to Evaporative Emissions, Section 303-13 in the Workshop Manual for removal and installation instructions. GO to HX45 . GO to HX45 . HX45 DTC P1443 and P0455: CHECK FOR EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAKS
    Note: When checking for leaks or blockages in the EVAP system, energize (close) the canister vent (CV) solenoid through the scan tool for a maximum of nine minutes per pinpoint test step. Then de-energize the CV solenoid prior to performing the subsequent pinpoint test step. This is done to assure proper closing of the solenoid.
  • Disconnect and plug the EVAP return tube (EVAP canister purge valve to intake manifold) at the intake manifold vacuum source.
  • Connect scan tool.
  • Key on, engine off.
  • Access VPWR PID. If the voltage is not 12 volts or greater, GO to HX61 .
  • Locate evaporative test port [marked EVAPORATIVE SERVICE PORT DO NOT USE UNREGULATED PRESSURE ABOVE 6.89 kPa (1 PSI)] near EVAP canister purge valve or EVAP canister.
  • If vehicle is not equipped with the evaporative test port, GO to HX50 .
  • Install the Rotunda Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester 310-F007 (134-00056) or equivalent at the evaporative test port.
  • Close CV solenoid by accessing Output Test Mode on the scan tool.
  • Select ALL OFF mode and push START button.
  • Regulate the nitrogen or argon gas pressure on the tester to 3.48 kPa (14 in-H 2 O).
  • Follow the instructions that come with the EVAP System Leak Tester and pressurize the EVAP system.
  • Perform the EVAP system leak test.
Does the pressure on the EVAP system stay above 1.99 kPa (8 in-H 2 O) and pass the leak test? Yes No GO to HX46 . REMOVE the EVAP System Leak Tester from the evaporative test port and REINSTALL the test port cap. GO to HX50 .
