I have a 2003 chevy malibu that won;t start. When you turn the key to on the Theft System light comes on steady ( no flashing). I t used o go into this mode periodically where the Theft System light would flash you waited 10 minutes then it would start. I have waited up to 15 minutes the theft system light stays on and car won't start.. The light never goes out. Does this still sound like a problem with the Theft System? If so how can I fix?

The late-90's GM Passlock system (e.g. 1997 Malibu, Regal, Impala, etc.) has a part around the ignition tumbler that goes bad and no longer reliably detects the valid key. In that situation, the "Theft System" light will slowly flash and the carburetor is cut off so the engine won't start. The time-out on the system is 10 minutes - you don't have to do anything, you don't have to disconnect the battery, the key can be out of the ignition -- it's just a time delay. After 10 minutes, the light goes out and you can try again (but if the key is again not detected, the light will start flashing again and you have to wait another 10 minutes)
Someone else, who had this problem, told me to remove all other keys from my keyring. The weight of the other keys pulls on the ignition key causing the key to be unreadable. It has been 7 weeks since I have been doing this and have not had a problem

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

On a 2003 Chevy Maibu the theft system light comes on and blinks when the system is triggered. The car will not start and the fuel pump cuts out. You must turn key to on and have all doors closed. Keep the key to on for 10 mins til theft light turns solid and then disappears. Then turn key to start and it should fire up.

no, but I can tell you how to reset theft system. turn key on engine off for about 15 min, after 15 min, turn off for about 15 seconds, then try and start car. if not running repeat reset.

My 2000 cavalier has done this for 6 months. You take your key out then open your door, wait ten minutes and the system resets itself and the car will start-annoying you bet!!!

yr gonna have to get the passlock key and punch it into the radio so u can solve ur problem most chevy dealships can assist you with that.
