To remove you ignition barrel is a simple process you need to remover the steering column covers from around the ignition switch.
there is a small hole located in the ignition barrel you will need to gentle push and hold an Allen key in the hole and rotate the key to the accessories the barrel should be come lose and gentle be pulled out.
please note that if the internal locking mech is not correctly depressed you will not be able to remove the barrel.
also if you have lost you key you will not be ale to remove the ignition barrel and will need to get a lock smith to rplace the whole thing witch can cost from $120 up to $250 depending on the locksmith

Have 99 VT, went to replace ignition barrel, but cannot turn to on position to unlock barrel.. Inside is locked shut, how do i remove barrel..help!!

The short answer is you can't. Unless the existing barrel will turn the lock assembly will need to be removed when some knocking around, compressed air or penetrating oil could free the mechanism just enough.

A lot depends on how difficult it is to remove the lock. Some are very difficult and require the removal of half the dashboard and steering column and a steady hand for some precision drilling or clever chiseling. You might decide to take a shortcut from the official method and by the time the lock has been removed it will be in no condition to be refitted.

Good luck!

How to remove barrel,demonstration

remove the steering lock barrel can only be done with the original key and the ignition in the acc position .this can be done in situ but some motors like VW you have to drill the hole to push the pin in so you need to know where it goes and to get to it you have to remove the steering column
