You need to replace the brake light switch its mounted up under the breake pedal. Very easy to replaced its always held by a clip or screw type bracket.

SOURCE: shutting off

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Try checking around the the brake pedal, check for the connection that goes from the alarm to the brake switch. Some times they become loose if its not a proper connection .

SOURCE: Problems 1. My brake lights stays

Hi, has someone recently installed something in the car or otherwise messed with the wiring? If not, is your ABS light on? If not either, I would say your hazard switch has gone bad.

Testimonial: "Thanks for your advice, I managed to find the cause of all these problems. Incorrect bulb make was the root cause."

What goes wrong with abs brake module in 99 dodge ram 2500 diesel truck

It isn't often we get enough information to make a diagnosis, but I think we can in this case.
You have a break light switch under the dashboard that is plastic, and has a "plunger" button.
When you press the brake pedal, that allows the plunger button to extend, which closes contacts inside the switch, and makes the brake lights come on.
If and when that switch either breaks or gets loose, the plunger will stay extended, and the brake lights will stay on, discharging the battery.
God bless your efforts to see & fix this.

Low beam lights shut off

Never heard of this before thats for sure i have read the question 3 times and i cannot think of anything likely to cause this --??.-- unless the control switch is faulty but why does one stay on till the brake is pressed ,would need a wiring diagram to see if their is a relay for each side of the dipped beam if and when you sort it out please post a reply as this has me intrigued

I have a 05 diesel excursion an lately it's real hard to get into reverse even thou you press on the brake as hard as you can plus the cruise seems to be sticking after you set it if you press on

Make sure the brake lights are coming on when this occurs,i think you may have a problem there based on the symptoms of the gear selector and the cruise control.

Break lights stay on when car if off

I had this same problem. I turned off my car and the brake lights stayed on. I looked under the dash and found that the brake pedal, when not pressed, barely touched the brake light switch, which controls whether the brake lights are on or off. Initially though I just wedge a thin piece of adhesive foam between the pedal and switch, which worked fine for several months until I found the time to properly fix it. My brake light switch was adjustable so i eventually adjusted the nuts on each side of the brake switch holding it to the pedal bracket so that the brake pedal pushed in the white brake light switch when released. Hope this helps!

97 jeep cherokee Ignition_Coil_Wiring_Diagram

if you don't press the brakes will it still shut off:? i would check to see if the brake booster is bad , the most simple way of checking this is to clamp off the vacume hose going to it and press the pedal if the vehicle shuts off you have a different problem if it stays running most likely the booster is punctured internally causing the engine to have an abrupt lean condition and shut off

The rear lights won't shut off when the car is shut off.

the lights you have on are probably the brake lights. you need to check the brake light switch. it is probably stuck in the on position and that would cause the cruise to not function properly because the cruise automatically shuts off when you press the brake pedal.
hope this helps!

1993 saturn sl engine dies

I just had this problem with my 97 sc1. I found that the driver's rear tail lights were staying on dim when ever the car was running. In my situation, the cluster of wires that ties to the rear tail light is also the wires that tie to the fuel pump. Every time you hit the brake, it shorted out and cut the power to the fuel pump. Test for this problem by pulling one of your tail light bulbs, if the car shuts off or wont start without it, this could be your problem.
