Question about 1998 Lincoln Continental

No matter what setting i have my heater set on it will only blow out the defrost and it will not blow hot only cold

The heater was working great, i was at a gas station last night it was getting hot so i turned the blower and temp down a few minutes later as i was driving i noticed i was getting cold i realized that the air was blowing out the defrost and it was cold air. my setting was still on floor, now no matter what i set the heater on it blows out the defrost and will not get hot at all??????????????/

    i found a vacuum hose under the hood close to the windshield i put it on and now the air blows on the floor setting and vent setting like it should so one problem fixed but it still will not get hot i find it odd that it was working perfect and then had both problems at once so i am sure something happened to cause both problems what do u think is causing the cold air

You might want to check the module under the glovebox

Since your blower is working and it is a heat issue,thats where we'll start,First thing is have you checked the coolant level in the radiator when engine is cold,make sure it is filled to top,next verify you have coolant in reserve ,Start your van and get it up to normal operation temperature,If your heat gauge on the dash works correctly it should be 190 degrees,Now lift the hood and locate the two heater hoses going into the heater assembly at the fire wall,Both hoses should be hot to hold on to,if both are hot and no heat inside your problem will be the blend air door in heater assembly.
if neither hose is that hot you need to replace the thermostat in the engine to get it up to 195 degrees.
if one hose is hot and one is luke warm then the heater core is blocked and to blame. hope this helps you.

The problem is most likely a bad dual climate control valve. This component is located on the right side near the radiator under the hood. It will have several coolant hoses hooked to it and 2 silver cylinders protruding from it. You can clamp off the heater hoses at the heater core and see if both sides cool then and this will tell you that the valve is letting coolant thru when it shouldn't be.

This will narrow it down to either the valve or the control head inside the car,or wiring in between them. The only way to narrow it down further is if you have a scan tool that could access the climate control data. Have seen several of these valves cause this concern and have only seen one control head cause it.

engine fan not kicking in at right interval to bring air in so its pulling in hot air threw ducts
or you have a disconnected duct blowing all air out not to right place

guages could be faulty or bad a/c relay

SOURCE: AC/Heater control problem

In the dash there is a part called the blend door and blend door motor. This allows you to have warm air, and not just cold AC or hot heated air. This motor goes out and whatever position it "dies" in is what kind of air you get. The part is relatitively cheap but the labor cost is huge, because the dash needs to be removed for access.

Looks like your mechanic messed up. If he has any integrity then he should take care of you. If not and you want to try and tackle it yourself then you have to ask yourself this: do I want to pull the dash out? Because that is what that will entail. Sounds like he may have messed up the ducting somehow. Unless the blend doors and directional doors are electric actuator operated in which case those actuators need to be replaced

Sounds like the flap valve in your vent system that allows air to go to the defrosters is either jammed or broken. Unfortunately you will have to take the vent system apart to look.

It sounds like you have a blend air door stuck. This is in the housing of the heater a/c blower unit under the passenger side of the dash. There is a motor on the top of the housing that could possibly be stuck or on working.

93 ford festiva heater only blows cold air.


The heater only blows HOT air when set on defrost or floor settings. If you have the lever set for vent, only cold air will come out. Check to make sure you set the controls to floor or defrost. This is standard for all Festiva's.
