Re: chevy tahoe 2002 low coolant light is on. where do...
Chevy as most GM cars usually needs Dex-cool antefreeze
But Peak is OK as it can be used to top-off any color of automotive antifreeze including green, yellow, orange, fuschia, blue and red
More info here http://www.peakantifreeze.com/peak_global_lifetime_5050.html
Also check the system for leaks. If you need to add coolant at least once a month there is a leak.
Good Luck

natural for engine temp to rise in Traffic - Until Themostat opens ) cooling fan sensor kicks on fan . But Antifreeze is not just a Cold weather item . Coolant is Absolutely Necessary for Hot Days . You must be full to recovery bottle setting of cold when checked prior to start up . Coolant for your make / model is Reddish - Pink colour and should have a reading of -25 thats negative 25 degrees the Lower the Better even - 50 .. Why ?? - 50 is 50 %% antifreeze / Coolant Concentrate MIX Gives Hot weather cooling Ability or very cold weather starting / winter HEAT .
I would perform a coolant pressure test because these engines are known for leaking intake manifold gaskets.Check and see if your oil is starting to turn a creamy tan color.
This indicates a low level of coolant in the coolant bottle/resevoir..... this symbol represents the radiator or coolant system liquid level.
Warning comes on to warn of coolant level too low.
When the engine is cold...remove the cap and check level. Add 50/50 antifreeze/water to level indicated on the side of the coolant bottle or tank.
Reservoir Bottles/tanks are usually transparent and you can see the coolant level through the plastic.
When coolant topped off to correct level, lamp will go out automaticly...no need for scanner or shop to turn it off. It will come on as a 'self check' when you turn on the ignition and if level is okay will go out when engine starts.
The dealer recommend GM Dex Cool Antifreeze. But there are complaint against this type of coolant. http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-128547.html In GM cars we replace Dex Cool with Prestone green coolant. It's up to you. Ask before but if you decide to change the type of coolant then: If your intention is to add coolant only, then you need: Mix with ANY COLOR ANTIFREEZE ALL MAKES ALL MODELS of cars and light trucks add to ANY color antifreeze PRESTONE 50/50 PREDILUTED ANTIFREEZE/COOLANT EXTENDED LIFE up to 150000/mile 5 year protection. DO NOT ADD WATER.
If your intention is to flush the RADIATOR (Cooling System), then you need: Mix with ANY COLOR ANTIFREEZE ALL MAKES ALL MODELS of cars and light trucks add to ANY color antifrezze PRESTONE EXTENDED LIFE up to 150000/mile 5 year protection. On the back you have to read directions: Step 1 Drain. Step 2 Flush. Step 3 Fill. Recommended to ad 30% to 50% volume, distilled water. If you flush the system and rinse with water you must add only 30% water to the antifreeze. There is more water trapped inside the engine compartment, because the thermostat is closed. Make sure to have a coolant density tester. When you finish one of 5 balls must sink, that indicates that you reached 50/50 strength. That means 50% Prestone and 50% Water, which will provide to your car a -34F degree FREEZE-UP Protection , and +265F degree BOILOVER protection. The next day, with a cooled engine open radiator cap, and test the strength of coolant. If not quite right, then siphon coolant from the radiator and add antifreeze, or distilled water as necessary. Make sure to disposal the used coolant properly.
THE ENGINE IT WONT CRANK IF OVER HEATED CHECK COOLANT LEVEL IF LOW ADD COOLANT.REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF ENGINE STILL OVERHEAT AT A STANDSTILL OR IN A LONG LINE OF SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC.COOLANT FAN SHOULD COME ON.IF ENGINE OVERHEAT CHECK TO SEE IF COOLANT TURNS ON IF NO.CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IFBOTH OKAY HOTWIRE COOLANT FAN TO SEE IF FAN RUNS IF NO REPLACE COOLANT FAN MOTOR. IF FAN RUNS PROBLEM COULD BE PCM OR THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY OR DAMAGE WIRE CONNECTOR TO COOLANT FAN.USE A CODE SCANNER TO LOOK FOR PCM OR ECT FAULTS.IF EVERY THING CHECK OUT OKAY LOOK AT ENGINE OIL DIP STICK.IF IT LOOKS LIGHT BROWN OR LIKE MILK SHAKE YOUR HEAD GASKET BLOWN.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER TO ENGINE TO HELP RAISE BOILING POINT.WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES HOT.
At the radiator, drain and then flush with water then add 1 gallon of new antifreeze and top off with cool water. Now the cooling system will work.
If you have not performed routine maintenance on your cooling system - it will clog the heater in 10 years or less. Sometimes a bottle of radiator flush (purchased at any walmart or kmart) can clear the heater core - but you will have to run it with the heater on full heat setting for a few hours of driving.
There is a small hole under the extension behind where the pulley is
mounted, most times barely visible. If you see any coolant there the
pump seal is leaking. Many times it will show up better with the cap
off, as internal pressure can sometimes push the seal against the shaft
and temporarily stop the leak. If any coolant is found there,(sometimes
it will run down the lower hose and appear like a bad hose or clamp)
the pump needs to be changed. No, it is in no way related to a manifold
gasket leak.
Coolant=Antifreeze. It's the same stuff. It lowers your freezing point and raises your boiling point. That way you don't freeze your engine and you don't boil it when it gets hots. Now, onward....
The easiest thing to do is go buy 50/50 premixed antifreeze. The ratio is ready to be poured right in. The parts store will be able to tell which antifreeze will work best for your Jeep. It more than likely just uses plain jane green antifreeze. That's what I put in mine.
Otherwise you can buy non-diluted antifreeze and add water to make a 50/50 ratio.
A 50/50 ratio is important because too little antifreeze is bad, and so is too much. For instance, a system ratio of 80% is highly ineffecient. That's why I'm suggesting the prediluted stuff. A ratio too low risks having your block freeze up and bust.
If you do add water, DO NOT use regular tap water. Only use DISTILLED WATER. It's cheap, and it's free from impurities, whereas tap water is good to drink, but it bad for your antifreeze system balance due to extra minerals, etc in that water.
You can buy distilled water at any grocery store. It'll be labeled distilled, not drinking, water.
Your coolant should be changed every 2 years unless you have extended life coolant.
Be sure to check for leaks so make sure you're not loosing too much antifreeze. The tank where you pour it is called the reservoir tank, or expansion tank. It's where the coolant goes when it expands when heated.
Be sure not to let animals near the antifreeze. It has a sweet smell to them, but it's deadly. Antifreeze can be recycled. But if you must dispose of it, carry it to your local hazardous waste facility. It only take a small portion of that stuff to taint thousands of gallons of water.
If you have a 4.0 six cylinder especially, be sure to follow these directions. The blocks and heads are iron and they will rust really quick internally with too little antifreeze is used. These are awesome engines often getting 200k miles+.
If your coolant level is dropping, I would suggest that you take a good look at the water pump. That is a very common coolant leakage probelm area on your vehicle. I change 2-3 a week.
Hope this helps.
