If you go through all the work to remove the flywheel, it would be best to just install a new flywheel. I am not that knowledgeable about the ranger, but I have never seen a flywheel that could be reversed. They typically have an offset or a pin which prevents them from being installed the wrong way. If it is a manual transmission, then the ring can sometimes be heated and removed.

To flip the flywheel on a for ranger 4 or 6 cyl, and others,,,with manual trans only, you will need a torch set,, heat a 1" section of gear teeth to glowing red,, just glowing not melting,,, the ring gear teeth should just fall of,, then if you somewhat fast,, 10 seconds or so just flip it over and put it back on,,before it stops glowing,,, let it cool down and it should be good as new,, it will seize back to the presure plate shoud be good as new

SOURCE: Replaced starter in '93 F-150 6 cyl auto, new

If the starter bendix is working then they gave you the wrong starter. or if yours has the cylinoid mounted on it , this woud be bad. either way you will need to take it back to the store. flywheels can't be adjusted

Starter on my 91 ford ranger 4 wheel drive starts my pickup a couple time then it just spins have changed it 3 times now

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter. If you changed the starter look at the flywheel.

Put new starter on a 1984 Ford ranger xlt 4x4 2.8 6 cylinder. The starter has a ruff crank start then it won't start nomore just makes a sound like the starter is bad won't turn over. What is the...

Many vehicles need to have the starter aligned. When you removed it did you find any small metal shims anywhere under the retaining bolts, etc. If you don't put them back in the alignment of the starter will be off and the starter drive will not properly engage the flywheel, this can jam or even break the started drive or flywheel teeth.

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

If the battery is showing 6 volts, its half dead. Are you sure the cables are clean and tight ?
Battery voltage at the battery and starter should be at least 12 volts.

REMOVING STARTER ON 1994 TOYOTA CAMRY LE (6 CYLINDER), NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHERE TO FIND THE STARTER AND HOW TO REMOVE IT AND REPLACE IT

The starter is found under front end.. Near where the moter meets the trani - you will see the flywheel (a big round gear) the starter connects to the flywheel to turn the motor..

Disconnect the battery..
Disconnect wires from starter..
Should be 2 bolts that hold the starter in - remove them..

The starter goes in only one way so you cant mess it up..

Rate well ;o)

Starter runs but will not engage fly wheel

The Bendix drive is bad in the starter. You can either rebuild it or just purchase a new rebuilt starter.
The Bendix drive is what pushes the starter gear into the flywheel the then it will turn the flywheel. When the Bendix drive goes bad the starter just spins/whirls.

Need advice please

Bleed right side first...open valve on caliper and have someone step gently down on brake. close bleeder. repeat till no air comes out. Repeat on drivers side. Keep master cyl full while doing this.
Grinding noise can come from bad starter drive gear, bad flywheel teeth or misaligned starter. You have to check this...I can't see that far!!! Best way to see flywheel teeth is to remove starter and turn engine by hand while looking into starter hole.
