Question about 2005 Toyota Corolla CE
The lights on the rest of the dash are working so I've ruled out a fuse issue. I've popped off a small cover at the top of the gear shift console and there is what looks and acts like a release button there. I'm too unsure to go further. Don't want to mess anything up. The dealer wants over $100. Labor to change the bulb. Historically I've changed other bulbs, no problem.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

It's most likely the 12v 1.7w bulb located underneath the "prnd21" To get there: remove the the console piece just surrounding the black shift area piece- there are six tabs to undo, using a thin screwdriver(a piece of tape may help to not scratch the area) carefully pry and lift out that piece. Now, you'll see 4 clips(2 on left, 2 on right) on the black plastic shift piece, carefully unsnap these and lift up this piece. The bulb slides in and out, it DOES NOT twist. I used a needle nose pliers and a piece of one of those "jar openers" you get from real estate people(advertising..) There's not much room to get in there and get a grip on the bulb, but you can do it.

The center console needs to be removed, pull the shift plate plastic
cover off, remove two bolts inside the console storage box, remove the
phillips screws that are visible, the front center storage box also has
to be removed, the bulb is located on the left side of the shifter from
Hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

you have to remove the screws (or bolts) inside the center console compartment. pry up the little ring around the shifter. pull up the e-brake and pull that whole assembly up. once removed there is a small 194 bulb located on the drivers side on the bottom. you should see the little black base. twist counterclockwise to remove. replace bulb and reinstall

If the shift console is on floor then look for bolts holding it down. Take out bolts and then you can maneuver console so you can see where light is plugged in and get the right light to replace it. It will probably be a small light which tend to cost a bit more, but at least you'll have the light back.
