SOURCE: Missing and backfiring during acceleration and climbing hills.

Could be vapor lock in the fuel system. Next time it does this, stop and try removing the fuel filler cap... Hope this helps...;-)

SOURCE: car lurches and bucks, rpms erratic on acceleration on hills

You could have any of these problems:
1) vacuum leak- broken air hose or disconnected air hose.
2) water in the gasoline- add a water remover to you gas tank.
3) bad or disconnected spark plug wire(s).
If this were my Forester, I'd take it to a mechanic who has a electronic engine tester..

SOURCE: lack of power when climbing hills and slow to pick up speed

It sounds like your vehicle needs a major tune-up. Try putting in some fuel injector cleaner gas additive and a new air intake filter.

Why does my 98 dodge caravan have trouble climbing hills?

A transmission issue would give vibration tremendously during uphill. If you're not getting the vibration, or burning smell of transmission fluid, suspect clogged catalytic converters.

94 Cadillac Eldorado overheating uphill

This actually sounds like your motor is not the problem it sounds as
thougth your transmission is in need of work. if you have flushed your
system also may look at your oil pump system as the change in pitch of the road to climb hills may infact be pulling sludge against the sump
tube screen and plugging the oil pump. these are the only two reasons I can see for this to happen if system only dose this when climbing a hill
.

What is meant by overdrive

Overdrive is really an extra gear. It is normal to take the car out of overdrive when climbing hills as it has a high gearing and the car can struggle up the hill. Some older British cars had overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears effectively giving the car 6 gears operated by a lever on the steering column. Modern automatics sometimes have overdrive controlled with a button on the gear lever.

Losing power going over hill

well i think the piston ring are already loose, causing insufficient air compression leading to lower power especially on uphill tracks. check also for the air-fuel ratio! too much fuel usually is the cause for thick smoke emission; too much air, causes also less power.
