Question about 1986 Ford Escort XR3i
1986 ,classic car this one ,havent got a haynes manual laying around anymore as slung them but if my memory serves me well their is one wire from the battery to the fuse panel inside the car and if this fails for whatever reason then its a no go as nothing will work.Had a argentinian here a week ago as he has one of these cars and he wanted to sell it as no work and no social so hes going back to argentina ,a black LHD version and it was immaculate inside and out mechanically good as i have looked after it for him ,Well this is spain and cars do not corrode here on this costa but after having the enviromental police around i didnt want to buy it as iam only allowed two cars on my land ,one for me and one for er indoors ,i already have a VW camper and a old jag stored up. they just turned up one day with a load of breakdown trucks and lifted all my classic resto projects and i got no scrap money for them .

cam shaft timing marks on back of cams ,two slots ,use a flat piece of metal to align .remove no1 spark plug and drop long thin screwdriver down it to bring piston just below tdc, then align cams so both cams are on the rock (valves closed) with knob on back cam aligning with pick up sensor left side between lobes.then bring piston up to tdc and fit belt.turn engine over twice with socket on bottom pulley to make sure no valves clear pistons.Remember to remove flat edge from back of cams i didnt last time and bent my home made tool

both the cam gear and the crank gear timing marks should point straight up. if you are replacing your timing belt you may also want to replace your timing belt tensioner and water pump. I have owned several escorts and have learned the hard way that it is a good idea to replace all of these at the same time.
