SOURCE: Transmission fluid leaking from bell housing when in gear.

If you have never done this before,it may be best to take the truck to a shop or have some one with experience help you. You will need the truck up far enough to take out the transmission. The linkage and drive shaft has to be removed, then unbolt the transmission from the bell housing.Special tools may be needed to pull and replace the seal.
Transmission fluid needs to be changed since it is a brownish color.

SOURCE: 2001 VW Beetle manual transmission leak

Hi Cornate . It sounds like your rear main oil seal has gone . Not a cheap job . Judge how serious it is by topping up your oil level to the correct level and reset your trip counter . Check your oil level weekly and top up and work out how much oil is being used/lost (Per litre / miles) . Regards VW Audi tech

SOURCE: My Chevy 2002 Tahoe is leaking oil. They told me

this truck is equipped with an aluminum oil pan you could have 1 or several things going on... a stripped drain plug which is causing it to leak or it may be a leaking front seal or a rear main seal. If it is a front seal it is not to labor intensive. But if it is a rear main seal leaking it will require the transmission to be removed since the seal is a 1 piece rear main

most likely problem is a blown head gasket

    Hydraulic leaking

Do you have a hydraulic operated clutch? The slave cylinder for a hydraulic clutch would be on or sometimes inside the bell housing. Some ford and chevy trucks put the slave cylinder in a very difficult to reach place-the transmission has to be removed to service the slave cylinder. Most cars have the slave cylinder mounted on the outside of the bell housing. If they leak, replace or rebuild, although those internal slave cylinders I think can only be replaced.

manual transmission hold grease rather than fluids. fluids that run around that area would be fuel, and break fluid to the rear.

My oil is going some where but i dont know where in my 1997 chevy silverado

If you are blowing white smoke on start up, it could be your piston rings, valve guides, or valve guide seals. Valve cover gasket, especially towards the back also likes to leak, and would be hard to detect as it gows down the rear of the engine, bell housing and transmission.

Remote oil filters on many trucks can have fittings vibrate loose after many years of service. Start the vehicle, let it warm up, and do a slow deliberate, walk around inspection, looking for oil, smelling for burning oil, and anything out of the ordinary.

Non of this would suffice for a thorough inspection by either a mechanic or a learned friend. Keep an eye on your fluid levels, residue and build up around your exhaust is indicative of oil blow by from worn piton rings.

    Fluid leak around starter

It may be a rear crank seal, or oil from the torque converter (automatic) or the input seal on the transmission. Check your fluid levels in your engine and trans. A visual inspection will help also. you could remove the inspection panel on the bottom of the trans bell housing. As for the clunk I would be leaning towards more of a starter issue for that.
