SOURCE: 2004 Avalon How to

To remove the door panel below are the following guides:

Tools:

Screwdriver (flat and philps head)
Rag

1. Locate the screws found in the door perimeter. Such as the latch inside, the handle and the holder to name a few. If I recall correctly you would need a Philips for this one.

2. Pull the handle off the door. You should also see a plastic guard. Pull it out using the flat head screw driver to pry it out. You may use a rag to cover its tip to avoid scratching.

3. Pull off the panel from the door. There should be plastic retainer clips that are holding the panel. It should offer resistance and snaps once you get the panel off.

4. Do the reverse when done.

Removing rear door panel 2004 subaru outback

Remove the trim ring around the inside door handle by pulling it up and towards you first, then downwards.
Remove the switch panel. There are two spring clips holding it. Lever up carefully on the top end edge first, then push the panel towards the car floor. Disconnect the electrical connector.
Remove the screws behind the door handle, under the switch panel mount, and on the armrest.
Dislodge the 7 trim clips around the edge of the door trim, starting at the lower edge and working up. Lift the door trim out of the top channel.
If you remove the plastic sheet, take care not to tear it, a spatula is handy for this.

    1. Remove the door handle bezel.

    2. Insert a flat-bladed tool between the door handle bezel and the trim panel in order to release the handle bezel tab retainers.

    3. Remove the door trim panel upper extension.

    4. Release the upper extension by pulling outward on the front edge in order to release the upper retainer clips.

    5. Remove the upper extension from the trim panel by lifting up and out.

    6. Using a suitable flat bladed tool, gently pry the manual lock lever from the door trim panel. Remove the trim panel screw.
*Remove the screw (2) from within the opening where the manual door lock lever resides.
*Remove the screw (3) from the opening in front of the armrest.
*Remove the screw located beneath the map pocket, if equipped.

    7. Carefully slide the trim panel up in order to release the retainers from the door. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

Note: the top part of the door panel is not separate from the bottom. The "upper extension" is just the small triangle piece directly behind the mirror on the interior.

    Simplified instructions
Remove the bezel around the door handle.
    Pry out the manual lock.
Remove the 3 or 4 screws depending on options
Slide the door panel up off of the engagement tabs.

Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
