Cranks but wont start. while it cranks it sounds as if the starter engages and then disengages and after a while will eventually start i have been having this issue for 6 or seven months now. and sometimes it goes away for a few days and then shows up again. now i tried to jump it the other day cuz it died again but no such luck with it starting. no click nothing. recently it has been clicking like a dead battery a few times and then it will having the cranking issue and start finally after turning and holding key a few times. i cant even put it in neutral to move it out of the way it seems as if its locked up. anybody have any ideas im stumped i replaced the ignition switch a while back and seemed to fix the problem for about a day

SOURCE: 1996 cavalier will not crank

when it wont crank, you will need a test lite to ck the small wire at starter for a 12 volt signal when commanded to start by the key. also make sure there is 12 volts from battery going to larger wire on starter. if so and still wont crank, starter replacement is probable. (assuming grounds are clean) they can be very intermittent. another quick test would be while trying to start, holding key in start position, rap lightly on starter with hammer to see if it kicks, if so, replace starter.

SOURCE: 1994 corvette wont start

I had the same issue this morning...ran yesterday just fine, but this a.m. when I went to start...nothing. No dash lights, no click, nothing except some odd ticking from the dash(?) ~ weird. Anyway, replaced the battery...starts like the champ!
Changing the battery is a bit of a challenge, but I found a GREAT step-by-step on

SOURCE: 2003 Trailblazer- no power after key stuck in ignition

Sounds like an antitheft problem I would start with the antitheft system. Usually when you only have one key all keys have to be programmed together even the original. When you have more than one it is easy to program additional keys.

If the BCM has been replaced, the BCM has to be reprogrammed by a dealer as it control many car functions.

Starter will not disengage after

It sounds like the "bendix drive" is gone in your starter. This is the assembly that engages and disengages the starter to the engine. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

Chevy lummina 1999 3.1 . the car will not start. replaced starter still will not start . solnoind engages the starter, but wont turn the engine over. solenoid making only a clicking sound when key is...

Sounds like a battery to me.
They can show enough voltage, but when put under load they do not have enough amps to start...and amps are what really matters when engaging the starter.

2006 Pontiac Montana wont start after replacing battery. Engine cranks as soon a key is moved from off, then continue to crank even after removing the key.

Sounds like your starter solenoid is stuck in the on position if you can get down there and have some one hook the battery on, hit the starter with a hammer some time this will disengage the starter.

On the 5th. starter?

Get a shim kit for the starter. Disconnect the ignition so it won't start while cranking in the start mode. Start with the thinnest shim between the starter and block. Crank and listen to the starter operation. Add more shims until the starter drive gear engages and disengages without making any wierd binding or grinding noises while cranking the engine.

So when you turn the key nothing happens? From there you will want to use a multimeter to test the starter. Should be getting 12v at solenoid when you crank. If you are then sounds like bad solenoid on the starter. Then go from there.

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced
