Engine running rough and check engine light on

My son ran his 99 toyota camry below empty. He then drove it to cumberland farms and put $5 in gas in it. After 10 or so minutes of driving the engine light started blinking on and off and the car began to run rough and sputter. What could be the problem?

He plugged up the fuel filter try changing that first and if that helps then he won't need to replace the whole pump

Get someone to draw out the contents of the fuel tank then refill with gas. Should be fine. Do not run the car anymore until you do. It could very well destroy the engine.

Goto autozone/advance/pep boys and have them do a free OBD check with a scan tool. Most likely the O2 (oxygen) sensor(s).

A flashing check engine light indicates a cylinder missfire. A evaporative emissions leak (the result of a bad gas cap) wouldn't cause a rough running condition. How many miles are on the vehicle?

have your idle control switch check, easy and inexpensive to replace. The idle control switch is what keep the engine stay idle. also have your throttle body clean by a professional having that many miles, it will give you better gas mileage.

Make sure you don't have a faulty fuel injector, this may be the cause, also use a can of carb spray and spray around the intake gasket to check for leaks, if one is present you will notice a diff in the engine sound when the spray hits it.
